The US are now allowing liquids to be carried on board planes in US in limited quantities. Must be carried in clear plastic zip lock bag, of less than a quart in volume. No single container can exceed 3 oz.

That's the written rule.

A tip for travellers from outside the US, make sure the container has oz. measurement on side, or at the very least ml.

I was travelling today and left the bulk of my luggage at hotel that I'll be going back to in a couple of days, and took my little bag of toiletries so I wouldn't have to check luggage. However my shaving cream only had a measurement in grams, and it was 75 grams (=2.65 oz). Couldn't convince anyone that it was less than 3 oz, so had to throw away. Not a biggy, just an inconvenience, as I do have my preferred brand of shaving cream! I do have a spare back with the rest of my luggage, just in case.

Oh the other thing, the bag I had actual fit the dimensions and was clear plastic but had a real plastic zip on it - not a zip lock. Wouldn't allow that either - had to go and buy a zip lock (or what I'd call a snap lock) bag from the gift shop. Go figure, don't really understand why, because it achieves the same end (in fact is stronger than a snap lock), and once you go past security point serves 0 purpose anyway, whether seals with a zip or zip lock what's the difference? Oh the LOTFAP!!

BTW, only a problem today (in TX), had no problems with the exact same arrangment thru Newark earlier on (or when leaving HKG enroute to US).

Bottom line easier to just check it all in and be done with!

As with many other aspects of US security, a lot of agents make up their own rules.

I had my tiny 1oz bottle seized in BOS a couple of weeks ago, despite being within the published rules. Yet the lady in front of me had lots of large (300ml size) bottles, in several bags (since no way could fit in 1 1l bag) and got them through.

As for the zip, was that an NZ amenity kit bag by chance? I had this queried a few times but it was let through for me.

Won't directly anything about two particular letters, the first between H and J and the second between P and R, as there often is not a lot of it evident at checkpoints.

No I was worried that the amenity kit bag might be too opaque for their liking. The bag is a clear plastic zip up bag that I find quite handy as it is reasonably strong. It was actually originally a bag that a 3 pack of underwear came in!

No one queried the opaqueness of mine (since could still clearly see the contents), only whether or not the zip was acceptable

Maybe they thought the zip was a potential weapon? Perhaps they thought you looked like Jack The Zipper?

Just looked at all the items that I normally use specifically for when I travel (small size containers) and they're either 100-125ml or 100-140gm . I guess either way I'm out of luck.
