Transit at Sydney airport

Hi

I flying to Osaka from Christchurch with a 3 hour transit stopover at Sydney airport. My query is: do you have to go through Australian customs to get to the transit lounge in Sydney?
I've read that excess alcohol has been confiscated prior to entering the transit lounge - would this be correct? And what about food, can this be taken into the transit lounge (from the aircraft)?

OT - While I'm asking - Does anyone know if there are ATM's at Osaka airport that accept foreign credit cards for cash withdrawals?

cheers

Tim

Transitting at Sydney you do not have to go through Customs and Immigration however you are restricted on liquids, so yes, you would have duty free confiscated

When you arrive from CHC, follow the signs for international transfers. That will take you to a security screening point, following which is an escalator to the departures level where the airline lounges are located. No need to go through Australian immigration or customs.

Note that the usual liquids screening/limits apply to all passengers going through the security screening checkpoint, so any liquids greater than 100ml will be confiscated at that point, so cannot bring duty-free alcohol through the screening point.

More here: ATMs 1st/2nd/4th floors (You'll arrive on 1st Floor)

if you wish to take duty free alcohol then you will need to buy it in the departure hall prior to getting onto your flight to Osaka in Sydney. if you buy it in CHC you will lose it in SYD.

Re: Transit at Sydney airport

Is there a specific "transit lounge" or do people just go into the main departure terminal?

Are there any actual transit lounges any more - i.e. a place you get quarantined in until your next flight?

Arriving international transfer passengers pass through security screening then up the escalator and enter the main departures area of the terminal, mixing with all other departing passengers. They would then have access to airline lounges such as the Qantas Business and First Class lounges if they meet the entry criteria.
