Just had a friend come back from doing SYD-KIX return, they were offered ODU for $200 per person out of Sydney. From KIX they weren't offered it, but they asked, and the price again was $200. They also received full business class miles and SC's for the upgraded flights - so quite a nice return for the payment anyway (along with the better seat and included extras too). They had booked cheapo fares on one of the previous sales as well.
Just wondering if your friend has any prepaid packs, like food, entertainment, or comfy? What happens to them if your get upgraded?

Having read this thread, I'm asking the same question.
Wouldn't mind the trip back (KIX-SYD) in a quasi-business class seat, but I have shelled out for extra luggage, food & AVOD (its a cheap seat, but I want to enjoy myself when I'm on holiday) I would like that to be taken into account with the upgrade.

How much do these extras cost in relation to the $200 for the ODU to *Class?

I don't know the answer and I am only guessing but considering JQ is a LCC they are not going to offer you an ODU to Starclass for $200 and then take into consideration what you have pre-purchased and deduct this from the payment due. Just like they wouldn't offer you a refund if you pre-purchased extra luggage allowance and then you do not use the extra allowance.
I may well be wrong but I think you will need to consider whether an ODU to Starclass is still worth it considering you have pre-purchased some additional items....
$200 for the better seat for such a long flight i think is easily worth it even if you had paid for the others.... Maybe you could get double the drinks (one paid for the other as *class)
Food/Comfort extras are not refunded when upgrading. I'm not sure about the extra luggage but it is also marketed as 'non refundable'.
I reckon that they would let you take however many kilo's you bought in addition to the 30kg allowance in StarClass though.
In your case I would try to haggle but I think you'd need to be lucky to receive a discount. It's not impossible for them to upgrade you for free so there is some room for negotiation.

I flew SYD-HNL a few days ago and enquired about a *Class ODU. I was told it was $300 Australian (this after two separate JQ phone operators told me ODUs were not offered and all *Class seating has to be finalised no less than 24 hours out). I was on the verge of paying it when I double-checked to make sure I'd be earning SCs and FF points. The quick response was no. SCs and FF points are not earned on JQ ODUs. I was very surprised so I declined and phoned QF from the lounge. The lady I spoke to thought it was odd and couldn't see why it wouldn't be an earner so she checked for me by phoning through to JQ. She came back and told me that the JQ ticket clerk was correct.
What's worse, the JQ flight was delayed and I ended up missing my AA flight onto LAX. I therefore missed out on FF points for this sector (the re-booking saw me fly direct to SFO rather than HNL-LAX-SFO). Considering the only reason I took JQ3 instead of QF3 was to make the connection with the AA flight in HNL, I was extra unhappy to have missed out on FF points there too.
Hazarding a guess, I reckon if you had have spent that $300, you would have received the 140 SC's and QFF points.
I believe "the party line" is these cash upgrades do not earn points - and that's what you were quoted.
It's just like:

However, the experiences posted here and on FT seems to indicate they do.
I believe the J crediting relates to an error in the systems and it may be fixed at any time (like the old AA A booking class upgrade issue that used to give F SC's for upgraded flights, it was eventually fixed.)

Re: ODU - Jetstar Starclass
I've noticed the Jetstar website occasionally will offer a StarClass upgrade when *booking* your tickets.
Was doing some searching today, selected my flights, and then it popped up a window that try to hawk off a StarClass upgrade (at the regular difference between what I was set to pay and the StarClass price).
Not really an ODU, but it shows that Jetstar mustn't be selling them too well on certain routes.
