Now I was hoping to access the AA lounge in LAX for my short flight to Las Vegas and the above statement makes me think I will not be able to do it. My AA ticket will not be part of my current international ticket (using FF points anyway) and if I can confirm that I can access the lounge then I'll go with AA.
Also, to confuse the issue even more, on the Qantas website...
"Access to Partner airline lounges
In addition to Qantas Club lounges, you can relax in British Airways lounges (Terraces and Executive Club lounges), American Airlines® Admirals Club lounges and US Airways Club lounges.
To access a partner airline lounge, simply present your Qantas Club card or Platinum or Gold Frequent Flyer card at check-in and again with your boarding pass at the lounge reception. You may also invite a guest. Note that both you and your guest must have onward travel that day on a flight marketed and operated by the partner airline whose lounge you wish to visit.*
* Marketed and operated means a flight operated by the same airline whose flight number appears on your ticket. Includes American Airlines® or British Airways operated flights with a 'QF' flight number on your ticket."
This indicates that I CAN access the lounge as I will be booked on a flight operated by AA.
Anyone with experience in this?

No problems getting into the AA lounges with your QF gold card. Regardless of itinerary or travel class. I often fly via Chicago and visit the Admirals Club there. Just show them your gold card and boarding pass at checkin - they write down your name and number, which i guess then gets billed back to QF.
I think the info you were reading on AA's website refers to their own QF Gold equivalent (AA Plat) who arent allowed in the lounge except on int flights - we get treated well with lounge access compared to the AA elites, but they have lots of other perks, so i guess it balances out.
You should also get two drink coupons - apparently thats some deal that QF have with AA because QF club members are used to free drinks. The Admirals Club in LAX is the best I've been in, and I would highly recommend a visit after your long QF flight from MEL as the showers there are awesome, especially after that flight.
I am only a silver QFF with Qantas Club membership (though should be gold again this year). I have never had any trouble accessing the AA Lounge in LAX flying to & from the US with Qantas, even though my connecting flights are usually with Delta rather than AA.
Just so you know - you'll get a date-stamped slip for one free drink when you sign in, and after that you need to pay for drinks and (very limited) snacks. (Oh, and I noticed that most people were tipping the bartender even for their free drink. So I did too. ) If you want to eat you are better off going first to the Travel Cafe right near the Admiral's Club for soup or a sandwich, and then heading up to the lounge for your drink, the chance to clean up, and then a nice rest in an armchair with headphones.

And note that even though they usually only offer one drink voucher per person, if you ask nicely they will provide more. And when you run out, go back and ask for more.
But it better for Platinum FF's. We get to use the joint QF First Class / AA Flagship Lounge at LAX T4, where the bar is self service and includes some decent booze, such as JW Gold and Guiness.
