    Flight path maps

    Hi all,

I'm doing an RTW at the end of the year and I'm interested in the flight paths I'll be taking. Is there a website that maps the flight paths of long-haul flights, showing where the aircraft go, not just the Great Circle route between the two cities?

The reason I noticed it is the apparent ground speed difference between two of my sectors. NRT-ZRH in 12h45m, or roughly 750kph ground speed average, if you go Great Circle route. And LAX-SYD is at a ground speed average of nearly 900kph, again presuming Great Circle routing.

Now, I know there are obviously several mitigating factors (the difference in flight time for BNE-PER and PER-BNE being a classic example) obviously wind and aircraft type at least are at play, but the difference was so large, over such long flights, that I'm a bit surprised. Would the NRT-ZRH sector take a longer route, further north towards the pole? A flight path mapping website would be of great use!

Unless you have a copy of the ERC (en-route chart) and the pilots don't mind sending you the specific airways and route data that they have dialled into their nav sets (lotsa luck!), the moving GPS display is probably best you could expect.
FlightMemory will record your route but only Great Circle.
There are several live flight tracking programs mainly in the US but a fee is involved.

Ah well, thanks anyway Groundfeeder. I guess this type of info just isn't widely published.

    Cheers.

The routes aircraft used are widely published, you can purchase them from airservices australia, various pilot shops and online form around the world, you would be looking for enroute chart high (there are 4 for australia) or the global navigation chart series. Problem is that only shows the possible routes, a single city pair such as Sydney - LA could have 17 different route options, Sydney - Perth has 10+ for isntance.
