Not a hole in the system at all, but something which has been known about for ages.

Happy new year all.
I've been flying SYD-TSV (Townsville) a lot lately and have noticed on my statement if I fly direct I get 20 status credits each way and 1575 points. However, if I fly via Brisbane I get 20 credits to BNE and 20 more to TSV. I also earn a minimum 1000 points SYD-BNE and 1038 for BNE-TSV. The airfares are the same and direct flights are not common with going via Brisbane sometimes adding 1.5 hours to the trip. BUT I earn 4076 points and 80 status credits per trip versus 3150 points and 40 credits. Needing the credits to maintain my Gold status (never know when my travel budget may be cut for the year) I have the ethical dilemma of whether to book flights for maximum points (and minimum convenience) or not.
It shows that there's a bit of a hole in the system.

Perhaps a hole is not accurate. Still it makes the $ value of the points a bit hard to determine. If I can earn a third more points and twice the credits for the same fare it seems a bit dumb. But who am I to knock it? They'll change the system again tp reduce the points before we know it to free up some space in the Qantas Clubs.
Welcome to the world of mileage runs. Now if time or convenience wasn't a factor & if you could do it on the same day, and they let you do it for the same fare (they have been cracking down on this recently) you could fly via Rockhampton, Brisbane & Coffs Harbour to get to SYD. 8000 points return & 160 status credits.Originally Posted by Warks
Because of the dire situation from travelling between Melbourne & Canberra at peak times at certain times of the year, I have been routed via Sydney (ie CBR-SYD-MEL instead of CBR-MEL), and instead of getting 1000 points & 20 credits, get 2000 points & 40 credits, for more or less the same fare (a few extra taxes)
That would be good note.
I recently found out I have to travel weekly from Melb-Canb-Melb for the next 3 months and I was trying to figure out how to maximise my FF points.
I also need to get 150 more status points to get my Silver (until March 31 2004 though).
I would be very annoyed if I managed to get up to 340 status points and then it expires just before the next flight. :-)
Does anyone know the Qantas site that lists how many points and status credits you will get for whatever domestic flight?
Regards
Daniel

If you then click on the point calculator you can look at your specific trip including by fare type.Originally Posted by wleong
