Personally, I would not just settle for 23E in business class either. Take it for now and try every day (even looking multiple times a day) to change it. Then again at check-in, then again at the lounge, then again at the gate, and again on board (just in case there is a last minute no-show or op-up that frees up a better seat). I see from other posts that v8Statesman is a newly badged QF PS. Just conjecture, but the seat was probaly unallocated and Qantas call staff were advising the seat was "taken" when in fact, it was merely "blocked". If so, I'm sure he would have been successful at the airport.
