Give QF a call, they should be able to link the two bookings for you.

Hi hope someone can help me out with info. Have booked my flights to the US with Qantas, and have now decided need onward flight to Nashville and would like to book with AA. My question is seeing that i did not book at same time will i be able to book right thru at Tulla, and if Melb flight is late will Qantas arrange for a later flight with AA seeing they are connected airlines![]()
Give QF a call, they should be able to link the two bookings for you.
It does not automatically provide protection but it can help. In fact you should be able to check all the way through to Nashville from MEL.

I've found AA are generally pretty good if you miss a flight (be it their fault or not). Unlike in Australia (usually anyway), they'll let you standby for the next available flight at no charge. Obviously its on a standby basis, however provided its not a very busy day you should be ok.
It won't give you the same protection as if both flights were ticketed on the same PNR, although as others have said, the fact they're aligned certainly helps.
Whether the internal sectors are on the same PNR as the QF or not has no bearing on whether a bag can be checked through, bookings don't have to be linked in order for bags to be checked, though in your case it matters little given that you're going to have to clear customs with your bags at LAX anyway.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Good advice. I will ring Qantas and advise of additional booking. forgot i would have to go thru customs in LAX before proceeding to Nashville
