Maybe you could try a return Jetstar JetFlex flight to BKK, then look to nest a return flight BKK-LHR in between. Flights tend to be less expensive when purchased ex BKK.

Hi all,
I am about to book a flight from Syd to LHR and onto EDI and wanted to see if anybody had any advice or top tips on reasonable deals currently available. I say reasonable, because my flying dates are
- outbound around Dec 14
- inbound around Jan 19
Obviously these are busy times.
Other background info:
- I'm inclined to want to travel in at least a premium economy cabin. Maybe business.
- I'm a plat with with about 170,000 pts
- I'm open to paying or using points
- I'm inclined to book a QF economy ticket and request upgrades to Business class. I'd obviously be hoping they come through but am aware of a significant risk that they don't.
- I've looked briefly at Virgin Atlantic's premium economy: about $4,700
- I've looked at BA's: about $5,000
Can anyone offer any advice on:
- Any good deals they know of in economy / prem econ / business to LHR ?
(The QF economy ticket is coming in at about $3000 .. .. .. which seems a lot).
- Any advice on premium economy ?
- Any advice on whether my requests for upgrade on QF would likely come through ?
- Any advice on other airlines I could think about ?
I am aware of the obvious issue that I've left the booking a wee bit late. However this was dictated by the circumstances, I'm afraid.
Many thanks if you can help,
Victor

NZ premium economy SYD-LHR is A$3892 including all taxes & surcharges (out 13 dec, back 20 jan). Cheapest fare is a couple hundred cheaper than this but no availability coming back close to that date. You'd still need to get between LHR & EDI.
MH and OZ have business fares to London under A$5000.
Thanks for the help so far. Can you tell me:
- does MH have flat beds at that price (I think they're rolling them out) ?
and
- who is OZ ?
thanks again,
Victor
Thai was advertising biz class Aust - LHR, in the weekend newspapers, for about $5000 (not sure of dates)
Emirates Emirates > usally have low loads. so they are another option. They also go into Gatwick, Manchester & Glasgow, so you can avoid the LHR zoo
Try Australian Travel Agent : Best Flights - discount travel - Travel Agent Australia. They have odd & low priced biz class combinations.
Given your dates you will not have much choice
