Virgin Blue has announced a technology partnership with Amadeus, a technology company that has been a key provider for Qantas since the year 2000.

As part of the partnership, Amadeus will implement a new distribution, e-ticketing and interline solution to enhance the competitiveness of Virgin's short haul operation.

Furthermore, Virgin Blue's new long haul subsidiary, V Australia, will use Amadeus for its complete customer management and online needs, including reservations, online booking, inventory control and airport departure control.

<...snip...>

This is part of the carrier's strategy to diversify its distribution channels and grow interline traffic, as it expands its short-haul fleet. By enabling interline e-ticket processing, Virgin Blue will be able to receive interline passengers from full service ticketed carriers such as Etihad and sister airline, Virgin Atlantic.

Another little dent in the QF armour.

Not sure about dents, as Amadeus is used by many airlines already. (e.g. LG, TG, AF, IB, SAS, BA, LA)

It should not matter to Qantas who Amadeus other airlines clients are - they may even consider using the interlining functions that Amadeus facilitates in conjunction with DJ.

At least those with DJ bookings should be able to employ www.checkmytrip.com

I think the dent being referenced is not about the specific use of Amadeus, but the expansion of interlining arrangements with other carriers. It is just that Amadeus is an enabling component for the interlining expansion. Sounds like welcome news for DJ and V-Australia.

Sorry Serfty, I wasn't very clear.

NM has picked up on what I was meaning to say. QF has had most of this to itself since the demise of AN so this change will create more international business via interlining for VB.

With access to 1A (industry speak for Amadeus)DJ dont need to sign onto an individual alliance, they can pick and choose partners for Interlining/reciprocal FF points earn etc..without the cost .
For example if you buy a RTW tkt each carrier gets a proportion of the fare based on the distance flown/number of stops. DJ would lose out here financially as Dom legs vs tot trip lenght is V small. They are better off offering low instant purchase prices ,with interlining or codesharing with select partners where they can set the Minimum level they get for their Sector.
The other major benefit will be the new Amadeus checkin system ,which will allow DJ to seat more appropriately by Velocity tier status.
The only downside (but seems offset by the benefit) is moving away from the LCC Opensky platform they manage flights adds costs) I'm sure they have done the sums

I'm wondering when the Velocity Program will partner up with Virgin America.

I assume they have as well. While Opensky would have served them well, the added flexibility of using Amadaeus would provide a compelling argument against the costs given what DJ has become.
