Of course if your employer pays a corporate fare you get access to the lounge when you fly and a discount rate for lounge access at other times.

Horses for courses.

I think it's clever - it's targetting those with a lot of clout (those that have more than the equivalent of 100,000 velocity points in their accounts), and attempting to woo them over to Virgin Blue. Many of these would be high value customers.

Doesnt it generate a revenue stream for DJ as well? Amex must pay DJ to take the points liability and that revenue is then taken by DJ for seat redemptions- self funding almost.

Re: Free annual membership to the Lounge

Hmmm if only QANTAS were to match this promo it would sure be a tempting counter-deal... I love this idea, but alas would not get much value out of The Lounge. Unfortunately I also read that only Gold Velocity members can "donate" their memberships to somebody else using this deal. I'm a mere Red status, and the membership would automatically be made out in my name if I made the transfer.

A plus is that 100,000 points = $1000 Myer or David Jones voucher. That conversion ratio is not too bad.

I am only Silver, but got the email today telling me that even though I am already a memer of the lounge I can gift my free membership to someone else.
We know you already have Lounge Membership and we hope you'll enjoying all the stylish benefits. But now you have a chance to give all the comfort and prestige of The Lounge to your favourite person - for free!

If you transfer points from eligible American Express Membership Rewards, Diners Club or Westpac Altitude cards for 100,000 Velocity Points in a single transaction between today and 31 January 2008, we'll give you twelve month's free membership to The Lounge which you can give to a person of your choice. Worth $548, it's a gift that's sure to impress! Terms and conditions apply

and then in the conditions:

4. Each person can only have one Lounge Membership in their name. However, Velocity Gold Members or Members with a Lounge membership who transfer their card reward points for at least 100 000 Velocity Points in one transfer will be given the option to give a Lounge Membership to another Velocity Member.

Of course you get to keep you 100,000 points anyway - they are just in the velocity bucket and not AMEX's.
I took the plunge and it was all through within a matter of days -
Doug
