Now a $15 service fee for 1st checked bag.

United Airlines - U.S./Canada baggage information

Now you will have to carry small change to check in a bag (Elites excepted). Sounds like chaos?

Sounds like MOST airlines I'd say these days.

we use our 3 pieces a 1K allowance for each flight, and thank goodness they have not touched that!

Did you mean american airlines or American Airlines (AA)? This is the first I've heard of a fee for checked baggage. We have three flights coming up with AA in Sept/Oct - will we have to pay this fee or is it just the one airline at the moment? Our seats are all award seats so I'm presuming we'll be paying if we booked within the time frame - just hadn't seen anything on the AA site but might have missed it

If you booked and ticketed on or before 11th May there is no fee for your first or second bag at all.

If booked and ticketed after 11th May but before June 15th, a second bag costs USD25 per trip.

If booked and ticketed on or after June 15th, a first checked bag will cost USD15 and a second checked bag costs the USD25.

However if you did book after these dates there are exceptions and I believe you will qualify for an exemption as you are travelling on an award:
Quote:
The following customers will not be charged a service fee to check a bag provided the bag is within the weight allowance:
  • For the first checked bag, customers who buy a ticket before June 15, 2008
  • For the second checked bag, customers who purchased a ticket before May 12, 2008
  • Customers originating travel in the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada and traveling to an international destination beyond the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada
  • Customers originating travel outside the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada and traveling to an international destination
  • Customers who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class
  • Customers who purchase Business or First Class tickets
  • Customers flying on AA codeshare flights not operated by American Airlines, American Eagle or AmericanConnection®
  • Customers traveling on government or military fares
  • Military passengers on active duty
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum® or AAdvantage Gold® members
  • oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby members
  • Customers flying on the same reservation as an AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold member or oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby member regardless of frequent flier status or fare type (not applicable to group bookings)
  • First and Business Class MileSAAver® Awards
  • First, Business and Economy Class Aanytime® Awards
  • First and Business Class upgrades confirmed prior to check in
  • AAirpass travel

Re: Now a $15 service fee for 1st checked bag.

We booked all the AA flights in Nov 07. I can't see where it says we're exempt. The award flights were booked through Qantas, not AA. I think, to be on the safe side, we'll be prepared to pay. If we aren't asked it will be a bonus. On countdown now - 4 weeks to go

If booked in Nov 07 the first 2 points tell you that you are exepmt.

v8Statesman is almost correct; the date of actual ticketing may be more important.
