Singapore & Jahor Bahru - Tom Yum and Coconuts!

Stepping from a flight from SYD at about 2030, on Friday 22nd May, Blackberry buzzed with an email from a supplier informing me of some world first testing happening in JB the following Monday and would I like to attend - of course, and here's the outcome...

    Mr!

    24 May 2009 MEL/SYD QF426 Y 13C

I had Mrs! Drive me out to Tulla for a 1040 departure MEL/SYD/SIN. I chose to fly via SYD opposed to having an employee whom was travelling with me to SIN travel alone or travel to MEL for a MEL/SIN flight.

I checked my luggage through to SIN – the DOM check in didn’t have F tags and my SYD/SIN boarding pass (QF319 Code share BA) didn’t have any status details on it, only my QF FF number. I had logged onto the BA site on Saturday afternoon after my bookings were ticketed and allocated seats 26A & 26C (exit row) for me and my employee on the hope no one would want the B seat.

A question – does anyone have access to EXIT row seating on the BA website or is it just Emerald?

I wandered through to the QP-J lounge and had some quick breakfast with my flight being called final. I trotted down to the gate and found myself without a neighbour – good start so far. Again I was allocated an EXIT row even though my profile says forward isle.

At SYD, I boarded the bus to the INT terminal and it wasn’t long before I was out in the terminal finding one of my employees who needed to check in. Being booked a QF flight I wandered into the QF F check in with him to be informed that we would need to check in with BA – no problems – off we went to the BA F desk.

What a ratty bunch of people working for BA. It was like collectively they were having a bad day and they weren’t afraid to let the world know either!

I asked for my BP to be changed to a BA BP – what an issue this was to the lady who served us, she insisted that it was a huge effort and begrudgingly issued me a new BP (which had my status clearly showing). I then asked for an express card – she gave me 1. I pointed out there were two of us travelling on the same booking and I needed another for my employee, she wouldn’t budge – absolute nasty lady having a bad hair day! I walked over to the service counter and they gave me another express card without question.

We wandered through to immigration, expressed past hundreds of waiting people and were heading up the escalator towards the Flounge in no time at all.

I indulged myself in a couple of champers and a swordfish steak – yummy! My employee had multiple mains – it was like he hadn’t eaten in a month, his excuse was it was his first time Flounging and he wanted to experience all it had to offer – fair enough I thought. The bowl of fresh raspberries was a little over the top though (but very nice!).

We boarded out 777 and into row 26 to our assigned seats – no window adjacent to the seat however with some creative reclining, there was a view from A. The lady in 27B decided to do an on the plane 800 quid upgrade to J and it was looking good for an empty B seat, that was until a 6’6” bloke wandered in and had EXIT row all over his face – my heart sank as he wedged himself into the B seat. To his credit, he called the FA over and asked for a seat change which she promptly looked after – so for 5 minutes, I had a neighbour!

The flight got underway a little late and we took off into a nice afternoon of chasing the sun towards the nth west. Our flight path was quite strange – we crossed Katherine then turned towards SIN creating quite a lot of extra travel distance on our flight path. There didn’t seem to be storms or anything in the area and I wondered if that was fallout from the diving A320 last year and just a general avoidance of the area around that bit of WA...

Dinner was served – chicken, veges, green salad with fresh tomato and a nice fruit desert thing. A few G&T’s were had as well as a JD& coke over the flight and the 8 or so hours were chewed up pretty quickly.

After pulling into the gate – C25 I think, we headed towards immigration via a thermographic scan, through immigration and down to wait for our luggage.

Singapore is usually a fast efficient airport, I don’t think I have ever had to wait for my luggage for more than a few minutes but tonight the luggage took a long time – maybe 15 minutes or longer...
However bad, still better than SYD at 0800 on a Monday morning or MEL at 1700 on a Friday night!

We shot through the green lane and out to the taxi rank. My employees first impression of Singapore was hot and humid – I told him to reserve his judgement till the next day and the sun was up!

We taxied to the Furama City Centre – I chose this hotel due to its location to the bus rank we would need for our daily commute to Johor Bahru and also the fact it was close to China town – I had a mission that whilst in Singapore, I would buy a new Chinese tea pot and cups...
Oh my God – a centre building room... no windows in my room! This was the worst room I have ever had in my entire life – this has got to change, but I’m too tired now and it will wait till the morrow...

Re: Singapore & Jahor Bahru - Tom Yum and Coconuts!

    25th May 2009 SIN/JAHOR BAHRU TAXI

Up and showered by 6AM and standing at the hotel reception by 0605 explaining my dislike of my room to a more than helpful young lady – however, she couldn’t accommodate as the hotel was full. Oh well I thought, the bed wasn’t so bad after all...

My employee met me at 0630 and by that time I had decided to cab to Woodlands and work out from there what to do in regards to the border crossing. I hailed a blue cab and explained to the driver what we were doing and he offered to take us to the JB taxi rank for $45.

What a Godsend this driver was – he had all immigration documents in the cab with him, he organised another cab to take us onward after the JB taxi rank – great guy, needless to say, his mobile number was immediately stored and he was rebooked for the return from JB that afternoon and also the following day’s activity to and from JB again.

Exiting Singapore with the usual ease, we drove across the causeway into Malaysia to be greeted by the usual question and answer session through the back window of a cab. We were then told to exit the cab and follow the officer. Something was lost in translation and I had no idea what the ^&%# was going on until seated in a room with two nasty looking customs officers who thrust a sheet under our noses which printed in English clearly defined what was happening – we were being checked for N1H1 flu (swine flu) and at which point a questionnaire was given to us and our temperatures taken. Phew!

We passed, our passports were returned and the stern looking gentleman suddenly developed smiles and the ability to speak English and we were lead back to our cab – oh well, each country to their own...

We were delivered to the JB taxi rank where another driver was eagerly awaiting us to take us to a hotel in downtown JB where we were meeting our hosts for breakfast. We were quickly there and both of us were starved – we couldn’t wait ˝ an hour for our hosts so we dove into a breakfast fit for kings.

After meeting up with our hosts, we were driven to the facility where we were witnessing some testing (cutting edge stuff) at a secure government owned facility – again my passport was removed from my care (!) and kept by the security guards. Interesting they studied all the visas in my passport before issuing me a pass...

We left the facility mid afternoon for lunch at a roadside restaurant – me being me, I ensured I ate what I recognised, in this case rice and noodles and drank a couple of cold Carlsberg’s to wash it down. The others weren’t so careful and decided to sample all the local dishes. Thank God for potassium pills is all I can say! I think the thing here that put me off the most was the two mangy dogs that trotted around the restaurant (inside) while we were there...

Back to the facility and we bid our farewells to our hosts and waited at the guardhouse for our new found taxi friends to arrive to pick us up. During this time, my employee decided to sample the local produce – coconuts, direct from the tree. After a fruitless 10 or so minutes, one of the guards came and helped in his endeavour. Finally a coconut hit the ground and a machete appeared from nowhere and the coconut got opened.

After a taxi swap at the JB rank, we were quickly heading back into SIN. Exiting Malaysia was easy and entering SIN was a painful caused by an overly zealous immigration agent who had nothing better to do except scrutinise us. What didn’t help either was both of us were wearing company light blue denim type shirts and jeans – the border security guard was convinced we were seaman and it took a business card to ensure him we weren’t.

Mental note – stay out of lane 5 tomorrow!

Finally back into SIN, we partook in a couple of ales at the hotel bar then across to the Chinese market to a tea shop I knew existed there and sat and chatted with the proprietor over tea then purchased a new pot and setting from her. We then taxied to my favourite restaurant – DIN TAI FUNG for a feast of dumplings- ahhh I love DIN TAI FUNG...
Back to the hotel for a nightcap and bed...

    26th May 2009 SIN/JAHOR BAHRU TAXI

Much the same as the day before except no flu checks! Lunch today was at a restaurant in a shopping centre – nice food, Tom Yum(my) for me.
On returning to SIN later that day, we walked over to Clarkes Quay for dinner etc...

Dinner – hooters, crab peeled for us ahhh – a bucket of Heineken and it was on! Next stop was some other bar (don’t ask, I can’t remember) for an excellent chardy then onto some Scottish bar then finally (well it was supposed to be finally) to Pump...

Too much drink and too much fun – Mr! Cutting up the dance floor is not a pretty sight – I didn’t care – neither did the troupe of Philippine tumblers (not a single one above 5’ tall I swear) who thought we were great fun and joined in the party till the wee hours...

Re: Singapore & Jahor Bahru - Tom Yum and Coconuts!

    27th May 2009 SIN

I had tried to get to CKG today but the cost of flights was ridiculous – so after a sloooow start, we managed breakfast, got ourselves tidied up and parked the luggage with the concierge for the day (or what was left of it) and shot down to little India where a particular electronics store was visited and some $$$ was spent on equipment 2 times the price for the same thing in AUS.

The night before was catching up on me so I decided to pull the pin and head for the airport. We hailed a cab and via the hotel hit Changi about half an hour later. We checked in through First where our Y’s had a + added to them and through for a shower in the F lounge.
Changi seemed empty – is the GFC and N1H1 taking a toll on travel? I think it might be....

Typically disappointing selection of food in the F lounge sent us in search of food. My first thought was another lounge so followed the signs to the CX lounge – up the escalator and straight down the stairs – very ordinary...

Time was absorbed up by a mix of eating, a foot massage and a spot of shopping where I managed to delete a few K off the AMEX on nothing of real substance- mainly perfume and good grog!

Finally boarded and into my window seat where not long after takeoff I had reclined, extended and slept for about 4 hours. This was great, a bottle of water, another snooze, and we were descending into Sydney. Through an infrared thermographic scan then through customs, bid farewell to my employee and across to DOM for my quick flight back to MEL where my driver was waiting to drive me home.

    A footnote...

The Ministry of Sound used to have the BEST nightclub in the WorLd in Singapore...

It's now closed down - shame on you Singapore - shame shame shame...

This was the best I could find for all you clubbers (I'm not looking at anyone in particular...) out there...

Priceless...is this you or your employee? Locals usually have a trained monkey for these purposes!!I have crossed this border many, many times, over the years altho. usually by private car....once by train as well...we all had to "de-train" at the Causeway! How much did the taxis cost door (Sin) to door (Jhb)?

This is my trained monkey - come to mention it, he does look like a human eh?

SIN$45 SIN/JB or JB/SIN (thats hotel pickup / drop off)

then agreed cost in local currency in JB - from 35 to 50

    a good deal I thought

    Mr!

Accommodation in SIN is much better now than last year !

DIN TAI FUNG is a top place to eat, my Aussie friends love it and go there every time they visit. There is one now in Sydney. Goto love Taiwan dumplings

As for MOS, Well Zirca is interesting but being honest i choose upstairs are Attica II with dJ Stingray, or go to Zouk (3-4 bar/club like MOS was), Zouk has been around longer and started it all before MOS but i prefer the sound system there. (Attica is in Clark Quay also)

Saw Mark Knight dJ'ing at Zouk a few weeks ago and that was fantastic, hit set fininished about 4-4:30 i think but never even noticed the time, top night.

When out clubbing we always buy bottles, and atleast you get a bit of VIP treatment when you buy a couple of bottles of Vodka !

The IBIS isn't too bad either $$$ wise or stay wise (eg $A120/night type of rates). It's an IBIS of course, so don't expect much, but the rooms are clean and the location is ok. See also http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/comm...sin-15894.html (New budget hotel in SIN)

MunitalP, thanks for your TR! Good reading.
