    Laptop Connect launches NextG modem hire - Telco/ISP - Technology - News - iTnews.com.au

Rental avoids exorbitant hotel Wi-Fi costs.
A service launched today puts Telstra's 3G broadband modems into the carry-on luggage of business travellers and holidaymakers and bridges the time without broadband experienced by those shifting house.
For a very short term hire though, the pricing still doesn't look terribly good. You really need at least a week to kill the hotel pricing.

Minimum charge $55 - and a weekly limit of 1Gb, you owuld be better off paying $129 for one of the other prepaid services if you have coverage at the destination, and if you dont and intend using the service more than once why not jsut buy a telstra prepaid device? Neat idea two years ago , and you can always use the free wifi at Maccas!

Yep, we used the free Wifi at Mc D's recently on our trip from PER-BME via car when we stopped over near PHE.....

Hi there. As the director of Laptop Connect, I noted your comments on the pricing of our service with interest. While I agree that there are definitely some good long term pre paid and plan options for personal users (and we encourage anyone to go for these, if that’s your need) I think it’s worthwhile pointing out that the Laptop Connect offer is designed to help anyone who needs a short-term solution. It’s an economical solution when you have an ad hoc need for wireless broadband, or if you want a claimable wireless solution for business trips. For example if you only needed 7 days of use and were after the speeds and coverage of Telstra’s Next G network, a Telstra prepaid card with 1 gig of data is $229 vs an all inclusive $69.57 when rented with Laptop Connect. Take it for 14 days and it’s $309 prepaid for 2gig vs $98.90 hired. In comparison to a hotel connection, the daily rates are more economical in most cases and you can take the device with you to ensure you get your money’s worth!

Welcome to AFF, I can see where your target market it and I doubt most of the posters on FF would be it, we travel a lot and at generally IT savvy (assuming we are Australian based), however there would be a significant market for inbound business travellers burdened with high roaming fees, the proliferation of free internet through Maccas and Unwired hotspots as well as the trend by hotels to offer free internet such as the Intercontinentals and others would make it less attractive over time.

I noticed adverts for a similar service when i landed in Muscat yesterday.

Its a good idea if you were to travel Oz a little i think much better than crazy hotel rates are usually.

I realise you are aiming to provide a more complete solution, but while doing a business run through Nthn NSW at cheap motels most are now providing free internet in their cheap night rates.
