Air Canada permit pets as hand luggage | Travel News | News.com.au

FROM July 1 passengers travelling with Air Canada will be allowed to take dogs and cats on board as hand luggage.

For a fee of $63 for domestic flights or $126 for international, passengers can book a space under their seats for their pet, reports the UK's Daily Telegraph.
I wonder how this is going to turn out?

This is going to end in tears,no doubt about that, what happens if somebodies dog gets loose and mauls some poor lady's beloved moggy.
And what about the smell, even freshly washed pets have a bit of a smell.
I have two great danes and I love them to bits but the place for animals is in the hold.

This is a terrible idea. I can imagine spoilt, yapping lap-dogs making the trip miserable for everyone in the vicinity, whilst the owner gets all indignant about their little snookum's "rights". Much like parents who travel with unruly toddlers, refusing to control or discipline them, because they are completely blind to their little darling's antisocial, disruptive and extremely irritating behavior.

It's a good reason to avoid AC.

Gosh .. that is rather progressive

in real terms a small cat in a cage, or possibly a dog is not much more drama than a baby - but noone is allergic to a baby having said that

but I guess having gone into coughing fits over an extremely strong perfume on a plane - its a minorish issue

there is a limit of four pets per flight though

I think if done right this could be OK, but it depends on how well behaved the owners of said pets are.

Does make you wonder about what happens in an emergency though - thats my only concern

If you thought flying with a bawling baby wasn't bad enough....we bring you this special announcement......

Seriously, only in Canada could they think of an idea like this. It's ridiculous.

In an emergency, I'd say the pets are as good as dead. After all, would they be considered carry-on baggage? I wouldn't expect to see them sliding down the rubber slide. What next - animal life jackets to be distributed by the crew?

It is a fairly normal thing in the USA and been going on for many years , so don't see why there should be any issues in Canada

I hope this is poor journalism rather than a change from the current practice where you place your luggage under the seat in front of you. As someone else has noted this will end in tears. Hope it never catches on here in Australia.

I agree - I think the weight limit on AA is something like 10lbs so it is only small animals and they have to be caged/bagged and under the seat in front.

This might prevent many deaths of animals who travel in cargo...
