    Mechanical Delays and Travel Insurance

After being delayed for 10 hrs airside and having to cancel certain arrangements at cost to myself, I would have thought that Travel Insurance would cover most of the expense. However the fineprint got me on that occasion. Lesson learnt.

I am head o/s again shortly and looking to booking Travel Insurance that does actually pay for delays mechanical or not. What are personal experiences about travel insurance covering mechanical delays or is it something that Travel Insurance generally does not cover?

I am looking to learn from previous mistakes and read the fine print this time!

A few years ago we arrived at FRA on QF 2 hrs late due to mechanical fault that had to be rectified. We had non-refundable train booked 2:20 after original scheduled arrival, but couldn't get there in time due to delays (although we only missed it by just under 10 mins). QF told us to claim with insurance, insurance denied claim as it was due to mechanical fault and seek compensation from airline. So technically, delays due to mechanical fault are not covered by anyone, although QF did come good in the end with a goodwill gesture.

I went and re-read the Medibank travel insurance that I have purchased for an up coming trip. No coverage for mechanical failure and in fact it is specifically not covered.

I think it comes down to what the underwriters of travel policies can 'predict' and how to factor that into a premium. It would be possible to have a policy that coves mechanical failure but at what cost to the total policy.

For mechanical failure(s) we need to look to the operator for compensation.
