I am interested what others have experienced.

I am planning to use a card for the airfares and have a choice as I have 2 or 3 Gold/Platnium cards that offer free insurance.

I have never had to claim on travel insurance on the several trips I have taken.

I have wondered about this before but I've always had a lot of trouble trying to compare policies. Each policy has so many attributes that it would take a very long time to compare all the features. I started trying to create a table but gave up.

I've always used ANZ Gold because it covers frequent flyer points and only requires a $250 spend before departure, but for my next trip I'm using Amex Platinum. I also have a Citibank Gold but I've never seen a PDS and frankly wouldn't trust Citibank at all.

And I've never needed to make a claim either.

You may get a better response if you could indicate what the 2 or3 are...

I now have 3 cards (ANZ Gold, CB Gold and Amex QF Premium) which all offer travel insurance......

for ANZ Gold to be eligible for o/s travel insurance they only require you to pre-pay a minimum of $250 before your departure, so a one night pre-paid accommodation if over AU$250 would deem you eligible......so I book the 1 or 2 nights required to qualify for the insurance coverage.......

I then pay for my flights using my CB Gold (and now since I just received my Amex QF premium) will be using one of these to pay for the flights and get an additional insurance cover.....

of course i'm not entitled to be put in a position that i'm better in orginally should anything bad happen, but it kind of gives me assurance that if one of the insurance coverage is being difficult i could always approach the 2nd insurance company and vice versa..........

however I have not needed to make any claims to date....

AND to assist Lonely Flyer, I assume you are referring to international travels? as some cards do not offer domestic travel insurance in their free insurance......

You could take a look at the Macqurie Platinum card, first time this bank has offered cards, and if you join now you become a founding member with it embossed on your card, travel insurance looks very good, even covers domestic well, need to pay $200 / yr A/F may go up to $400 after founding member period ends, cheers Ben.
