Smile ANZ Platinum frequent flyer card travel insurance v other travel insurance

Hello everyone, we are a middle aged couple travelling to Hong Kong, Britain, Ireland, USA and Canada. We are leaving in 2 weeks. We will be away for 3 months. We are hiring cars in Britain and USA. I have ‘activated’ my ANZ Platinum Frequent Flyer card for insurance. I think from what I can see, it is pretty good. I am more than happy to pay for the travel insurance but I don’t want to pay for more cover unnecessarily. I have tried to compare apples to apples with ‘paying’ insurance policies against this one but it is really hard. Can anyone please advise whether I should take up further insurance and if so, which one? Thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

    Hi flossie, welocme to AFF

I believe with ANZ, you need to make at least a $250 purchase using the card in a pre-paid component of your travel.

The thing about insurance is to read and understand the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) relevant to the insurance and treat that like any other insurance policy. Take particular note of things like:
    • Who in your travelling party is covered
    • what are the limits of the cover
    • What are the excesses
    • if renting cars, is there cover for the country you are renting from and what is it.

Then compare it with a specific purchased cover, like that of Travel Insurance for Australians - Travel Insurance Direct Australia.

    That may help you decide.

Re: ANZ Platinum frequent flyer card travel insurance v other travel insurance

    Hi

I found the coverage and service to be first rate. I injured myself in Peru ... contacted the number provided, and SOS Australia who operate as the service agent for AIG gave me good and accurate advice.

SOS Australia were very good in responding to my calls from a difficult time zone.

I had all the medical services in South America and a visit to a hospital outpatient's dept in the USA and pharma costs reimbursed once I was repatriated to Aus from the USA. I was carried Business Class and my partner economy. In addition there is a resumption of journey clause in the policy, so we were paid back to the USA to pick up the broken trip about 6 months later (conditions apply).

The excess provisions are no more stringent than any other policy. Things to make certain of are:
Ensure you carry proof of the qualifying purchase with you ... a copy of the credit card bill with the over $250.00 charge on it.

In short, the coverage and policy worked outstandingly. Happy travels ...

To Karen and serfty, Thank you for the invaluable information. I have read and reread the PDS and kept thinking that there must be a catch that I was missing. Karen, it appears that there isn't one! As I said, I was very happy to pay for the insurance but just didn't want to buy more if it wasn't necessary. I think I'll just go and enjoy my holiday now and not give insurance a second thought. Thanks for putting my mind at rest! Cheers, flossy

    Hi

When flying with FF points can I assume that the add-on taxes paid with my ANZ Platinum FF Card (around $600+) would qualify me for the travel insurance?

Yes, as long as you have pre-paid a minimum of $250 towards any component of the trip.
