How to lose (baggage) weight

Sometimes it is amazing. I could easily accumulate 3-4kgs worth of borderline items from previous trips. Just wish I had more time to go through my luggage to ensure that it is optimised for lighter weight....

Buy a Netbook, I saved 1.5 kg by downsizing to a 10inch netbook at 1.2 kg including power adapter from my 15.4 inch laptop (2.7kg). Bonus is it last 5 hours on a charge and works better on small tray tables.

Wear your heavier cloths on the plane, denim can be quite heavy in your bags.

For me its simply just dont take what you won't wear !
I find i used to always take stuff i never ever wore, if i need a second formal shirt for example and laundry is not an option time to go shopping.

I hate to break it to you, but it hasn't stopped raining in Melbourne since Friday!!! No sunshine here!!

But back on topic.... I have always been a fan of travelling light. This is possibly influenced by having down a bit of bushwalking/trekking early on where one has to carry all the time what one has take,. So it becomes a great incentive to minimise.


On my flight-travels I often move around a lot...and so for me it is not just the plane that is the incentive, but also the whole trip to have few and light bags.

I often use duffle type bags as you cannot beat their volume to weight ratio, and their should strap means that they are easily carried.

Many of my trips are to off the beaten track type places and so wheelie bags are often not useful..ie stairs, across sandy beaches, boarding ferries and boats etc..


There soft shape also means that they are accommodating to being squeezed in to spaces on trains, yachts, taxis and the like....which is very useful as my family travels are for 5 and so space is also often at a premium.

I also use Bags which are wheelie bags on some trips...but are still mainly soft-case and so their weight is still very light.

I just bought a hardshell case, its 81cm in height, and it weighs close to 6.8kgs!!! aarrrghh it did look nice in the shops though being shiny and all, and it also rolled very smoothly on the store floors too - but not too worry, it will soon have character/scruff marks on them soon after being thrown around by various baggage handlers.

Anyway, has anyone tried those Airtight bags? where you suck the air out and shrinks your clothes and flattens them?
