the taxes and charges are $540.xx for 2 economy award seats with QF. Emirates charges and taxes are $157.xx for the same trip on the same dates. i think i'll keep my points for later and pay the fare of $524.xx plus $157.xx taxes with emirates.
(all of this is for 2 people too.) that just seems over the top on QF taxes and charges ...
heck, i will even see what emirates can do in business class for the short flight across the pond.

Re: taxes and charges to nz for an award booking
In January I used AA miles for 3 x business class Qantas flights BNE-MEL-AKL-MEL-BNE. For three people the total cost was $148.43. Two of the passengers were under 16yo so did not have to pay the $38 AU tax. For the exact same flights, Qantas wanted over $700 and 3 times the number of points/miles as AA (300,000 vs 105,000).
The OP mentions that taxes & charges for 2 return economy tickets to NZ are ~A$540. We don't know the originating city or the routing.
As mentioned by serfty above the taxes & charges ex MEL for 2 paid tickets to NZ are ~$380 and I think taxes & charges ex SYD for 2 paid tickets to NZ are ~$400.
OK, I am confused. There shouldn't be any difference in taxes & charges for award tickets or paid tickets. Can someone please explain this anomaly?
