Hi i have been trying to book a flight from melbourne to perth in january and no matter what date i put in i keep getting the same response, there is difficulty in booking your departure flight. Anyone else experiencing this??

I don't know what 'same' response you kept getting, but I just did a booking for Wednesday 9th January 2008 and the QF site worked fine. Showed lots of availability on all flights that date. However, I did not check award flights if that's what you were trying to do.
