... I was under the impression that the tags did nothing anyway. Bags are sorted by whaever information is part of the bar code on the luggage tag attached to your bag, not by the paper tag that the checkin agent may (or may not) attach to your bag...
This is more appropriate for wide bodied (non containerised) aircraft and relates mainly to the loading of the aircraft ... unloading is a different matter ...
I just checked in for a PER-SYD flight and got a yellow first baggage tag attached to my suitcase, rather than a business tag. I'm wondering if the check-in agent had just checked in a WP with a through booking internationally or, maybe, a new policy.

I flew PER-MEL yesteray and was just the usual business tag. I guess the agent attached the wrong tag n your case, as attaching a first tag would not make a lot of sense

Arrived last week on QF30 into MEL with bags tagged Business. There was a guy from QF hanging around the carousel apologising profusely to a husband and wife whose bags were tagged First. I don't know who they were but I saw them checking in at the First counter in HK (although they were seated near me in business). Anyway, they weren't too fussed and said to the qantas chap "it's OK - it's not your fault"
Anyway, all the economy bags came off, then business - first tagged stuff came last!
