I have just booked a BKK-SIN-BKK April flight in D class on Finnair as well as 2 BKK-HKG-BKK flights in D class booked previously.
Interesting in that when confirming flights you have the option to select seats from a seat map. Shows you what seat is occupied and what is available and you can click on an available seat and this becomes your seat selection.
When viewing my booking with check my trip my chosen seat selection appears.
This is the first time I will be flying in paid business class and I have never booked business class with any other airlines. Is online seat allocation standard practice when flying business class with other airlines?

All my prior J class trips have been booked via my TA so I'm not sure, but on my recent trip to SIN in F on QF I booked online and indeed selected my own seat right there and then. Although when I checked in at SYD T1 the CSA convinced me that 3K was a much better seat than 2K.

The BA and AA sites allow it ( for all classes where allocated seating is offered )
If you book QF flights on sites other than the QF wwebsite, they can offer it for QF flights
Yup, on a longhaul BA flight , you can pre-select seats in economy at time of booking
The QF seating doesnt tend to bother me since I have to phone to select the exit row seats anyway
Thanks Dave.
I suppose seat pre-selection on BA is available to anyone regardless of status. How would frequent flyers in long haul economy feel when they are allocated 76F because most seats have been pre-allocated by once in a blue moon flyers. And for the civil libertarians, yes I know they have as much right as anyone else to a good seat.
Interesting information and I wonder whether QF has penciled in for IT to make relevant changes to their website.
I can understand business and first class having ability to pre-allocate their own seats but not sure whether I would want Joe Nobody with wife and kids seated in the best(sic!) economy seats because they planned their once every 10 year trip 12 months ago.

Qantas & British Airways reserve pre-allocation of defined 'premium' seats for their higher status PAX.
e.g. With QF, it's QP NB, PS, SG, WP & CL.
On check my trip, this shows as all seating in the First rows of WHY as well as exit rows etc. as having already been allocated, when in fact many may not have been.

Sorry my mistake, you are right serfty.
They can in fact block off the front half of the corral for premium cattle and allow second grade cattle like Joe Nobody only to book in the back half of the corral.
<If there is anyone named Joe Nobody around, please do not take any offence>

Do remember , when so keen for them to treat nobodied worse, that to BA , QF Silver status is basically a nobody
To get the best seats pre-allocated on BA, do need emerald status. Of course at OLCI, it's open season
