Traveled BNE-HKG yesterday. Booked an upgradeable Y ticket and put in a request for an upgrade to J three weeks ago. Saw it logged in the system as 'request to upgrade to economy' (presumably a glitch in the software).
Checked Monday morning to be told 'your request has not been successful'. Planned for a trip in the back of the bus (less hand luggage, checked bag etc).
Arrived at BNE yesterday to be told my upgrade was successful! In fact, the Business section was about two-thirds empty.
What gives? If I'd checked in on-line, presumably the upgrade request would have fallen through....

I was monitoring a Y-J upgrade request last week from JFK (New York) to SYD.
This is what happens:
The QF MMB system reservation will say "an upgrade to Economy has been requested" as soon as upgrade request is lodged (ie up tp 90 days before travel)
At T-20hrs55mins a second reservation box appears for the same sector.
The first sector will always say "an upgrade to Economy has been requested" if and until this sector box disappears.
The second sector reservation box will read (at this stage) "Your upgrade to Business is declined".
Meanwhile checkmytrip.com shows 2 sectors too but is less cluttered and clearer. It says for first sector Economy "CONFIRMED" and for second sector Business "WAITLISTED".
This same state of affairs continues until T-17hrs, 35mins when:
Dealing firstly with checkmytrip.com:
The "Economy CONFIRMED" sector disappears and the second one now reads "Business CONFIRMED".
Meanwhile (ie at T-17hrs,35mins) at QF's MMB the following has happened:
The first sector record reading: "an upgrade to Economy has been requested" disappears.
The second sector reading now reads "an upgrade to Business has been requested"
At T-14hrs5mins the following has happened at QF's MMB (although it may have happened a bit earlier):
- previously 2nd and now only remaining sector reads "Your upgrade to Business has been successful"
- points, in this case 192000 (2 pax upgrade) have been vacuumed from QFF account (ouch!)
Moral of story - checkmytrip shows you much sooner than QF's MMB although I suppose QF has the right to reverse the upgrade up until it has helped itself to the points.

Excellent summary by MelUser. Exactly the same happened for me. The first evidence I had that it had been approved was a change in the requested seat (to 2K )

I have found that in the last 3 successful Int upgrades - Y-J, MEL-LAX, LAX-MEL, JFK-SYD all seat allocations have simply gone blank after upgrade - whether on checkmytrip.com or BA MMB.
Where abouts did you see your new seating allocation?

It appeared in MMB on the QF website, in the box up the top where it says "Seat request: xx"
I took some screenshots of the process because I thought it was quite confusing. They are at home but I can post them up in two weeks if anyone is interested in the bizarre and inaccurate error messages that the QF website displays.
