Interesting QFF Classic Award Rule

Hi Guys,

Just off the phone to QF re: an award booking I have scheduled for Feb next year.

Anyway, it goes a little something like this.

QF29 MEL-LHR (via HKG) in Y+
QF10 LHR-MEL (via SIN) in J

Out of curiosity, I researched J availability on the same flight for the MEL-HKG leg & also for the HKG-LHR leg.

It returns J available to Hong Kong, with Y+ only to London.

QF indicated because the flight number was the same all the way from MEL-LHR, they cannot change the class of booking for the 2 legs.

Has anyone come across this before? Any tips?

Cheers

Your routing will be currently ticketed MEL-(Y+)-LHR-(J)-MEL.

To do what you desire, it needs to be re-issued MEL-(J)-HKG-(Y+)-LHR-(J)-MEL.

This is harder than it looks, you run across the "Married Segment" issue where availability is set for different markets.

ie.e NO J award availability is set for MEL-LHR on QF29, but is for MEL-HKG on QF29. i.e. The J availability from MEL on QF29 is for those travelling to HKG - not LHR.

The only way around this is different flight numbers MEL-HKG and HKG-LHR, and the second flight needs to depart no more than 24 hours after your scheduled arrival into HKG.

Thanks serfty.

That makes perfect sense.

Unfortunately the day I depart MEL (26th), there's no availability in Y+ or better until the Monday ex HKG for the 2nd leg (assume this is due to heavy loads for business travellers Fri/Sat?).

Cheers

My next question - is HKG a good place for a 24hr stopover?

Or completely independent tickets for MEL-HKG, HKG-LHR & LHR-MEL? But that would cost a lot more points

Like Ric says i would say yes
Train is cheap from the airport and hotels are not that bad if your lucky.

Lots of shopping, good food and generally some things to see

I really enjoy HKG, it's a great place for a 24 hour stopover. Plus for those of us who are Sapphire/Emerald, a 2½ hour preflight visit to the wing/pier can enhance one's travel experience.

Hk is a great place to hike and there are loads of trails with most easily done in a few hours...Lamma Island has great seafood restaurants and the hike is along concrete footpaths and passes many villages..And I agree with the others re The Wing..An amazing start to your next flight...Take 24 hours in HK and you will be amazed.
