You can use Qantas FF points for booking flights on AA either as standalone tickets, part of a bigger itinerary, or around the world type rewards.

    Have a look at:
Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Qantas & Partner Classic Awards - About Classic Awards
Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Qantas & Partner Classic Awards - Points Tables

You don't need to join AA's AAdvantage to redeem Qantas points for flights, but you may wish to join instead to earn points in their scheme on flights that you take. Some people benefit from pushing points to AA rather than QF.

There is more in the American Airlines Forum here:
American Airlines Advantage - The Australian Frequent Flyer Online Community

But, keep in mind that pushing points to AA isn't the best thing for everyone.

Flying on AA is generally ok. Don't expect Qantas service, food or smiles. But they'll get you from A to B.

Which is more than can be said for QF at the moment

AA has decent enough service domestically in the US. The Int'l product is not life changing but does the job. The biggest challenge on AA is the food - mrssimongr refused to eat any on her recent flight in Business Class. I was already asleep before take off so I am not sure what the problems were...
