I am in the process of looking for best available routing for a round the world award ticket with Qantas/One World. Where can I get an idea how much in taxes and surcharges have to be paid ? I've found availability on all of the legs I want to book with the booking engine, and everything fits under the 140,000 point booking, but I have no idea how much additional taxes will be. I haven't gone ahead and pressed the "Make the booking" button at the bottom of the page yet. Do the flights get automatically booked once you press that button, or what is the procedure following it ? Do you eventually find out the amount in taxes after presssing it ? I haven't gone through to booking yet, since I wanted to experiment with different routings and compare taxes.

Its not ticketed until you provide your credit card details. So you can cancel out at any time until you have entered your credit card. And you get the taxes/fines quote before they ask for your credit card details.
Since you're experimenting with different routings easiest way is to click to get the quote (don't worry you can back out).
Other sources list the taxes individually so a bit of a pain to add them up. Some here may be able to help with which is likely to be higher or lower than alternatives if you post where you are interested in going?
General advice - keep connections as transfers as much as possible rather than stopovers. Especially in London. Mostly a transfer becomes a stopover for tax purposes after 24 hours, but IIRC HKG is an exception and it is based on arrival and departure on the same calendar day (or not). Unless there is a large difference in taxes, I think other considerations are more important - award availability, comfort of the flight, easy/hard connections, etc.
Taxes in the US are fairly uniform (only minor differences by airport) so routing wont matter much.
IIRC taxes in Spain are much lower than in UK, but there are no IB flights to WAW. Perhaps use IE (Aer Lingus, while it still is in one world) or AY (Finnair)?

It seems that when I browse for flights from New York to Warsaw, I only get either AA or BA flights, and all route via Heathrow. No options to take Finnair or Aer Lingus. Any ideas why ? I think both fly to New York and Warsaw.

AY is daily (AY6 Dep JFK 17:55, Arr HEL 08:50 -> AY741 Dep HEL 09:25, arr WAW 10:05), but it involves a 35 min transit at HEL which although legal, it is tight. Some days they offer an afternoon flight to WAW which would involve a 8h35 transit.
