Booking separate Award Bookings

Hi,

I want to book a one way award flight BKK-MEL. If I book it as two separate bookings on QF2 (BKK-SYD) and then QF136 (SYD-MEL), will they tag my checked luggage all the way through to MEL thus meaning I just need to transit in SYD and clear customs in MEL only. The reason I am asking is that if I book it as two bookings I can avoid the domestic transfer and spend the transit wait in the SYD F lounge instead of transferring to domestic.

All thoughts appreciated. I am booking the flights ASAP as otherwise I am scared the J seats will disappear.

Shouldn't be an issue. Qantas will normally tag your bags through and issue both BP's. ou will then clear customs at MEL.

No guarantee though - especially if you don't meet the MCT (Minimum Connection time) for flights.

Thanks Mal, I just booked the flights. QF2 arrives at 5.30am into SYD and QF136 departs at 8.15am so I think I should be OK with the MCT? Do you agree? 2 hours in F lounge appeals so much more that a domestic transfer.

Also am impressed you are viewing the forum this late, I thought I was the onyl one watching Steve Hooker win GOLD in the pole vault. What an effort!

Should be fine. When you check in at BKK, say you're flying to MEL via SYD and show both bookings and get them to tag your bags though as well as issue boarding passes. If they can't issue the 2nd boarding pass, then they should still be able to tag your bags through and you pick up the bp at the Intl connections desk in SYD.

There is the negligible chance that the staffer in BKK will refuse to check you through fully, but unlikely. If that was to occur, you still have plenty of time to go through customs etc, back upstairs, check in again etc.
