Balance transfer question

I have approx 295k FF points while my husband who is a Gold FF only has 190k after his lastest trip.

Would it be a good strategy for us for me to trf 100k across to his account? If I did it this month, when could I do it again? i don't understand the yearly limit - is it 12 months from today, or based on a calendar year?

I rack up points at a rate of knots due to credit card spending - I will get 30k again next month. I think from my reading around here it would be better on his account. Also, with points upgrades, if he uses his points versus me using mine to upgrade him would he be more likely to get it, or would it be the same?

100K max per transaction, one calender year between transfers from the one FF account.

Family Transfers
You are unable to use Family transfers as you have transferred points to a family member within the last 12 months.

Your last points transfer was: 29 December 2004

Your next eligible transfer is: 29 December 2005 ...
Still, I would transfer the 100k NOW and another 100K on 2nd October 2006.

Gold 'points' have greater Economy award availability and can change dates and time for a booking without incurring the 2½k revalidation fee.

Karen, I concur with serfty's comments - transfer points from the lower-tier member to the higher-tier member for the extra benefits available to your husband.

A couple of weeks ago, we did this with Mrs LW (she was Silver with 2 UC's and 110K points) - transferred 100K to my account (Plat) and she upgraded me uding the 2 UC's on a QF flight BNE/PER in Jan 06 (what a loving spouse ). She'll lose Silver on 28 Feb 06, as we are posting all flights to her AA Plat account (which she might retain). We'll transfer the remaining points to my account in 11 months.

Now I have 480K points and 2 UC's still left (like you, all the CC points flow into my account) but have requested upgrades on QF BNE/LAX/BNE that will hopefully come through, so that will rid me of 288K points. Being Plat and registering for the upgrades on the first available day (90 days prior to flying) should stand me in good stead to get the U seats. I should also retain Plat until 28 Feb 07. Then I can continue to burn points to get U seat availability for my immediate family until I run out of points/UC's.

That what I see as the benefit of transferring points...better access by the higher-tier member to upgrades, U seat availability, requested seating. With any luck, you and/or your husband will make Plat!!

Of course the other option (thinking laterally) is for Karen to undertake a DONE4 each year to reach and attain Platinum Status, hence guzumping Mr Karen's Gold status and making her points more "valuable" that his. And he can then transfer annually to her.

Me getting status just aint gonna happen. I have 94 lifetime status points. I only ever travel on FF seats, as I only ever travel for leisure. I'm actually not a very good flier and could never be like you guys up there all the time. I'm quite happy with my twice or thrice yearly jaunts and using points for family as well.

As for Mr Karen getting platinum, it could happen, as he'll already have retained gold as of next weeks and his reassessment doesn't take place till March 2006. Like a few years ago he'll probably end up a few SC's short - thought this year thanks to you guys I'll be able to introduce him to the concept of a mileage run.

Karen,

Sounds like you've really got it all worked out anyway and only want some confirmation.

Since your comments about Mr Karen's possible/probable Platinum status it appears that the reverse of NM's comment now seems the best way forward. Transfer your 100,000 points ASAP and even look at swapping some of the CC's around so that Mr Karen earns more points there also.

I have to say that a lot of people would love to have your predicament. :P :P

With 94 SC's you rival my parents!!

Best of luck to your husband in his attainment of Plat. That would make your travelling experience a whole lot better.
