A FRESH effort by Singapore Airlines to get access to the lucrative Australia-US air route has crashed and burned after the Government said there was nothing in it for Australia.
Transport Minister Warren Truss said there was essentially no commercial benefit to Australia from allowing Singapore Airlines to compete on the route against Qantas and American carrier United Airlines.
He made the comments after a meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong who pushed Australia to re-think its initial decision to bar Singapore Airlines from the route. Singapore has long sought to get access to the trans-Pacific route which is one of the most lucrative in the world.
Earlier this year, after years of campaigning, the government decided to leave the route open only to American and Australian airlines.
Maybe they should just publicise their rack rates from Australia to LAX via SIN. I just compared J fares and found a big difference:
SQ: $ 8,800 (SYD-SIN-LAX)
QF: $11,000 (SYD-LAX)
UA: $10,500 (SYD-LAX)
Quite a difference. Granted that it's a longer trip but $2,000 is nothing to sneeze at.

as i understand it SIN - LAX is one of, if not the, longest single international sector at 17.5 hours ... add onto that 8 or so from the eastcoast of oz to SIN plus layover and getting to the airport from home and that really doesn't stack up to a direct flight from oz to LAX

Yes, SIN-LAX is a long one. Total travel time for SYD-SIN-LAX is 26½ hours (includes almost 2 hours transit in SIN) so it is about double the length of a direct flight SYD-LAX.

yeah that's what i mean ... and for me doing BNE - LAX it is more than double the journey time ... i am not sure if 2000 bucks is worth that much to me (especially when i am not paying )

SQ is really only a practical option for those originating in PER (apart * alliance status chasers), particularly when flying to the east coast of US. But it does illustrate a point that you can fly for almost twice as long for 80% of the price.
Flag that. Get a better agent who know how to look for good fares from their consolidators and the RW offers in the market. Always much better prices than SYD->some location in LOTFAP->SYD.
If your going East Coast LOTFAP then it not a real big difference in travel time to go all the way around.
I'm sorry, but what do we owe Singapore Airlines? It's owned by Temasek, which is a financial body owned in turn by the Singaporean government, headed up by the wife of the current Singaporean PM, Lee Hsien Loong. It's clearly a business proposition (not that there's anything wrong with that), and arguments about 'greater good' are patently false. Does anyone think that Singapore Airlines would fly passengers from the US to Australia at a loss, just to prop up the Austrlian tourism industry?
I'm sorry but who said anything about owing Singapore Airlines something? What we do owe the Chinese clothes manufacturers? What do we owe Indian call centre operators? What we do owe Korean car makers? What do we owe American software companies?

Who is seriously suggesting SQ would fly pax from US to Aus at a loss - they want in because there is money to made. It's all about market choice & competition. Maybe there would be some lower fares and increase tourism from US to AUS (or more than likely the reverse as I am sure that SQ has a much higher profile here than in the US), and potentially lower costs for Australian business flying employees to the US for business reasons.
If SQ is so bad how come they can fly to MEL and BNE three times a day from SIN, yet our wonderful national carrier (to be protected at whatever cost) can only manage one a day?
