Well now that we have an understanding what IIRC is....IIRC the A320, 737-300 in WHY are actually single pin, and iPod headphone works.
In the refit 747 and 777 in WHY IIRC was a two pin.
The BP seats have the noise cancelling in the seats not the headphone itself.
Kaz - wholeheartedly recommend either the Shure's or the ety's (Etymotic ER-6i) ... got a pair of ety's myself but have friends with the Shure's and both are fairly similar. Once i bought the ety's I would never think of flying without them!
They're great on noise isolation and it means that you can actually hear the infight movies. I used to have my ipod up at about 80% volume before i bought the ety's and no only need to have it at about 20% for soft listening. At 50% volume, you forget that you're on a plane! When plugged into the IFE, I'm usually only at the first or second volume setting as well. The added benefit is that you're less likely to do damage to your ears if you use the the Shure's or ety's as you don't need so much volume.
I've even compared them back-to-back with the noise cancelling headphones that qantas provide in J class, and they are as good, if not better. The big plus compared to the noise cancelling phones is that the shure's and ety's are so much smaller and much more comfortable when sleeping.
Recommendation on the two prong to one prong adapters... at $5 each, buy a couple if you fly regularly. I've left mine on the plane before ... its easy to do after a long fight late at night! btw, I've never had a problem with them and they work fine in the 3 socket ports as well.

I haven't bought from these guys before, but they're quite active on another forum I'm a member of, and certainly seem very knowledgeable/helpful. Their price on the E3C's is $269 - $40 off RRP (and with free shipping), which seems to be a good price in Australia.

Note the E4 is really a replacement for the E3 and if I was buying now I would be getting the E4. I also had a very good offer to buy a set of E500 (the new replacement for the E5) for under $500 and if I had the funds spare I would have got them.
I know Brisbane Sound sell them, but not sure how they price for one-off purchases. Most of the major sound production/installation/sales/hire companies will sell them.
Now these are the opposite for in-ear devices like the Shure E3. With these in your ears, you will not hear what the FA is saying and will need to remove at least one of them from your ears. If you are plugged into the aircraft IFE system you will still hear an PA announcements since they are fed through the IFE audio system. But if you have them plugged into an iPod, DVD player etc you may miss the cabin announcements.
You won't have any sound level problems with the Shures. They are very sensitive (meaning they produce a high sound level with low input level), and in some cases you may find it hard to turn the volume down low enough! This has the advantage that many cheap headphone amplifiers get very noisy as they operate at high gain level, so operating the amp at lower gain will often improve the signal to noise ratio giving you clearer sound.
I've just looked at the two sites recommended and one calls the Shure E4 sound and the other noise cancelling. Reading the posts it seemed to me there is a difference.

Ok, I am now convinced the Shure E3's are the way to go. Any suggestions on the best place to currently get them?
I got mine on E-Bay. Way way cheaper than through a store. Just check and there are a few on there for around $190 - $200. E4's are on there for around $280

They are cheaper, but just be careful because I got burnt. Bought a pair of E3C's on ebay and they were great for the first week and then the earpiece fell apart. Contacted the ebay seller (Allan) who said it was not his problem and that I had to send them back to the USA for warranty repair.
I contacted Jands (the Australian importers) took them to jands warehouse at Mascot, and they confirmed that the product I had purchased was from an old batch manufactured 11 mths earlier and that faulty glue was used in the manufacture of the product I had. Thankfully, they were great and replaced them with a new set and haven't had a problem since.
I have used them on two USA trips in the past year and they are great at blocking out most noise. The only bad part is you can't hear the FA asking if you want another drink.
Cant comment on the headphones because i usually just use (i think class 5) ear plugs and try to sleep, but i must try some one day, could also be good for if i want to listen to something when i am driving my fast car (no stereo and a rather offensive exhaust sound).
But what i wanted to say is for myself Jands over the years have been great in there product support. (Pro audio in my case, Crown Amps and JBL speakers, Soundcraft consoles)
