This has been discussed in other threads, but I thought it worth a fresh start.
Qantas board to consider restructure plan - report
Wednesday July 11, 2007, 8:35 am
SYDNEY, July 11 (Reuters) - The board of Qantas Airways Ltd. is expected to consider a plan next week to create a separate company to own its fleet of more than 200 planes, including a A$23 billion ($20 billion) order for up to 115 Boeing 787s, the Australian Financial Review said.
Qantas executives would also present a plan to the airline's directors to spin off its freight unit and frequent flyer loyalty scheme, the newspaper said in an unsourced report on Wednesday.
The first board meeting since a failed A$11 billion private equity bid for Australia's biggest airline, would also consider a possible return of cash to shareholders announced in May, it said.
The report said it was understood that Qantas was considering various options for the fleet spin-off, including seeking co-investment from leasing firms and selling a stake in the business through a stockmarket listing.
In May, Qantas said it might spin off some freight operations and other units or return billions of dollars to shareholders following the unsuccessful takeover bid.
A Qantas spokesman declined to comment.

Alright, I’ll bite…
What is the best way to expand your brand and reach, with the smallest amount of investment, in the quickest time?
Franchise.
So QAN could get heaps of planes, kit them out to their standard - and the franchisee would staff and operate them to QF or JQ specs, while also paying a fee to QAN (part of which would cover the cost/lease payments on the aircraft).
Otherwise its just the typical capital investment vs leasing 'book twist'?

Wasn't Qantas New Zealand run as a franchise when it was Tasman Pacific? I guess it means QF already have expereince with franchising the brand.
IIRC, It was neither successful nor a good experience.
They seem to have a relationship that works well with National Jet? With National Jet running services branded as QantasLink.
“National Jet is the only aircraft operator outside the Qantas group entrusted with the Qantas brand and product standards…Our staff fly, maintain and operate this fleets of jets in Qantas livery…” - Peter Nottage, CEO National Jet

Qantas board to consider restructure plan - report
Simply because the Board is considering the reports does not mean the changes will be implemented. You would expect any board (competent or otherwise) to be continually assessing structure and options as external factors change the playing field (DJ->USA, Tiger, Climate Change , baggage restrictions, security etc.).
Let's hope we aren't in for another chicken little thread ...
