From 1 January 2007, Qantas will change it's policy on Inflight Meal
services. We have recognised that you have a request for a special meal
in your Qantas booking.
For flight services departing between the hours of 08.30-11.59 and
13.30-18.00, a light refreshment will be served onboard. Requests for a
specific meal will no longer be available for these services.

I noticed that too NM; I thought that implying the flights departing at 6pm would have a refreshment service may have been a misprint, but If so, why go to the trouble of mentioning 11:59; in that case it would have been 17:59 as well.
I did checks on EF for MEL-SYD-MEL on 29DEC06 and 07JAN07.
For both dates it's showing D (Dinner) for all flights scheduled to depart 6pm-8pm inclusive. For evening flights departing before 6pm and after 8pm both enquiries show R (Refreshment / Comp).
On the actual topic at hand; It would not be a huge loss for me, even if I still had such requests. The last SPML 'refreshment' I received was that tub of spiced fruit they used to give out.
These days I have disassociated myself from SPML requests.
I haven't received any similar notification and I also have a special meal request.
I wonder how they would handle the crossing of time zones, such as PER-East Coast? I'd hate to miss the old faithful Chicken Tagine.
I too haven't received a notification and have the special meal request. I think I too might miss the tagine and/or coriander chicken for dinner, but it seems to be aimed at the refreshment, which is usually the stewed fruit or Wallaby bar inmy case. Can't say I'd miss it.
I think BA doesn't have specials for refreshment service on domestic/europe flights either.
I think dinner service ends at 8pm too - "refreshment" after that on an 8:30 flight I was on.
