Unless you choose the right frequent flyer program you may find yourself stuck at the airport, reports Denise Cullen.

Trying to evaluate the merits of different frequent flyer rewards schemes can be like wrestling with jelly.

"There's a lot of confusion as to what a point is worth," says Clifford Reichlin, the founder of comparison website http://www.frequentflyer.com.au.

"People assume that a point equals a frequent flyer mile but of course that's not the case."

Late last year frequentflyer.com.au released a "points value comparative analysis" that compared two rival programs, Qantas Frequent Flyer and the new Virgin Blue Velocity.

I'd guess the 20% let their points expire to be an understatement.
