I'm reading through the PDS for the Amex Platnium CC Travel Insurance and was hoping somebody could clear something up.

To be eligable to receive the insurance cover, the tickets must be purchased using the Amex credit card. Now for the trip I'm looking at using it for, one ticket will be purchased using QF points (with the taxes on the Amex card) and the other purchased as normal from QF (ie: without points).

The PDS reads "You must retain invoices/receipts verifying that the relevant flight tickets were charged to your American Express Clatnium Credit Card Account". What I'd like to know is if it is acceptable to charge the taxes for one fare and the full fare for the other to the Amex card in order to receive the insurance cover? (ie: Medical, bags, cancellation etc).

Further on it does make mention that if your travel is disrupted and your ticket was purchased with award points they'll credit you with the $$$ value of the ticket (provided the taxes were paid using the Amex card), however I'm not sure if this extends to the rest of the insurance policy.

If anyone's had any experience with this, some guidance would be appriciated

I would be asking Amex (or their insurance provider) these questions and hopefully you will get an answer in writing.

Little use in relying on third hand information when it comes to what insurance does/doesn't cover and find yourself short.

Yeh thanks just called them then (now I've managed to get my head around all these different types of cards!) and as I feared they don't cover you if you use rewards points to buy the ticket. I'll go with the Rewards Maximiser Gold, good points, no frills.

You do get the free domestic air ticket. And for the flights that you pay with the Amex, the insurancce applies. And you get platinum customer service, which is much better than the gold one (I know - I had gold Amex, and now have Platinum). In fact, when I was at a shopping mall, and the amex sales people tried to upsell platinum to me, one of their selling points was that Platinum cardholders get Aussie cust svc and not Indian ones.

I think it is well-worth it, especially with the CPA/ICAA/other societies $295 Platinum ones.
