A man opened the door of a plane and jumped out as it prepared for take-off at a South Coast airport this morning.

The 33-year-old man, who is believed to be American, jumped out while the Regional Express plane's engines were running at Merimbula Airport.

The plane, which was stationary, had been readying for a flight to Melbourne about 11am.

The SAAB 340's doors had been closed and locked for take-off when the man sprang from his seat and demanded to be let off, police said.

A crew member was believed to have told the man he was unable to get off, but he then opened the plane's door and jumped out, police said.

A bit of excitement on the NSW south coast!

Wonder what he will be charged with (if anything).

I assume he will be charged... There seems to be a zero tolerance push happening, and for all the right reasons.

Remember that lady who tried to open the CX door inflight while flying between HKG and BNE? IIRC, she was charged with "endangering the safety of a plane". Assume similar charges will be laid in this case.

(Now if only the stoopid drunk on a recent flight of mine was charged. The plane was late, and he said loudly while waiting for boarding "They're lucky there isn't a time bomb onboard, cause it would have gone off by now". )

:P I actually think that is the funniest thing I have heard all day. Still wouldn't say it myself.
Mal.

Perhaps being in a restricted area without the correct authorisation might be a start. As far as I know, stupidity is still not a crime in Australia.
