Krisflyer vs United Mileage Plus?

I find myself with both Krisflyer and Mileage Plus Memberships with about miles 37,900 in Krisflyer ( 5400 miles to expire in April, May, June) and approx 22,000 Miles in Mileage Plus. I am not familiar with either programs as I have been a loyal Qantas flyer to date. Given my recent move to Europe, changed work travel paths, and the future of the Qantas Frequent Flyer in doubt with the proposed privatisation - I would like to know which of Krisflyer and Mileage Plus people consider to be the better program. I will be flying from Europe to Australia 2 times in 2007, and at least 2-3 Europe - US (West coast) trips in 2007. Which of these 2 should I stick with?

Re: Krisflyer vs United Mileage Plus?

I understood that the future of QFF was guaranteed by the group who propose to buy the company.

It would be possible to stay with QFF - you Europe to LAX or SFO flights on AA would get you QF points, and you could fly QF/BA home from Europe and still keep racking them up.

If I was in your situation I probably wouldn't change anything. Of course, other on this board may have a different opinion!

Re: Krisflyer vs United Mileage Plus?

I forgot to mention that my work trips to the US have to be on United ..
Therfore my freedom to select lies in the Europe-Oz trips. And I don't think i can retain QFF Gold on just 2 EU-Oz trips in Economy per year .. ?

(and I'm not sure I would trust any guarantees from Mac Bank ...)

If you are going to be flying frequently on UA for work, and just a couple of times a year on SQ for leisure, I'd stick with UA.

Re: Krisflyer vs United Mileage Plus?

Welcome to AFF moz

UA Milage Plus scheme is a good one if flying UA. Indeed if you route your europe-oz trips via USA then you will earn at least *Gold status (equivalent to QF Platinum), meaning 100% bonus miles on UA, upgrades etc. On top of that UA awards are far, far, far cheaper than QFF. Would seem to be an easy choice.

In the meantime I would think hard whether to use the Kris Flyer miles now or top them up for a more meaningful award. From 1 February 2007 there is a significant devaluation so I'd be inclined to use them first if possible.

If you do end up flying SQ in first or business be sure to get the PPS double dip.

Re: Krisflyer vs United Mileage Plus?

With your booked flying you will DEFINTELY make United 1K - the top level.

Then you get 6 x free Upgrades that will take you OZ-USA-Europe on each one. And about 40 x 500 mile upgrades and about 8 CR1 upgrades - all free.

And 200% (at least) of all miles flown.

No brainer.

Re: Krisflyer vs United Mileage Plus?

note the bonus miles (once you have status and any promos) are only if flying United

the 200% minimum earn ozstamps refers to again assumes UA MP status and flying United

Not necessarily - if he flies Lufthansa from USA west coast (or anywhere USA) to Germany he also gets 200% (minimum) in coach (any class) if 1K - or 1P.

And he can buy 1P (Gold) right now for $US100 and his first flight.

Re: Krisflyer vs United Mileage Plus?

That's true - I did simplify my answer a bit. Due to the profit share agreement between UA and LH, all LH flights between USA and Germany (only no other routes) are treated as if they are UA flights (for most purposes).

Still not quite the same for some purposes (eg using SWUs) and treatment depends on combination of operating airline and flight code.
