Re: Blast from the Past!

That was great, thanks!

I still remember my one trip to the Golden Wing lounge. My aunty was a frequent business traveller and we'd often drop her off at the airport (dad and myself), back when I was about...8 I think. We got into the lounge once, and I loved it. I used to love being in an airports (still do), and the lounge was icing on the cake!

It was about then, seeing all these big, busy businessmen with suits and briefcases running around, that I decided I wanted to be a business traveller.

It's taken a few years (I'm 23 now), but I've gotten there.

Cheers,
- Febs.

Re: Blast from the Past!

Causes me to bring out my mourning gear again. In memory of an airline which, if alive today and at its peak, would give QF a real run for its money. And in memory also of all those FF points and the life GW membership.

I don't know if that is true.. I'm sure if AN was still around, it would have devalued its points probably by as much as QF has..

When AN was around, you could do a round-Australia trip on Qantas for 30,000 points (No fuel fines, earned 1point per km [not mile], at one stage I remember earning 13 points per dollar renting a thrifty car with my ANZ QFF card in 96). Even in return Economy SYD-PER in QF, would earn almost 6k points return, so really 1 trip free for each 5 taken.

QF and AN kept each other 'honest' to a point.

Not only could you do an 11,000Km round Oz trip for 30000 points in WHY; there were no +++'s.

FWIW, it was 37,500 points in J; although you needed to book 350+ days in advance to get this on those BME/ASP/DRW flights on 146's.

I booked 6 over these (37½ point) J trips.

Note that in the mid 90's the cheapest sale airfares cost, in relative terms, a lot more than today. e.g. I flew MEL-SYD-MEL in 1995 for $216 on a sale 'super Apex' fare. With such inflated fares, the two airlines were able to fund these far more generous reward schemes.

Re: Blast from the Past!

When remembering the halcyon days of 1 point per Km , QF at least, did not offer a status bonus , nor iirc, had a 1000 point min earning per flight.

Also, as pointed out, cheap airfares were a lot more restricted. istr that a cheap economy return tended to need a sat stay and had a 14 day apex restriction

On the plus side, upgrades on SYD-MEL were v cheap

The only reason that fuel fines were not added to the Around Australia fare was that they didnt yet exist. If they had existsted, I suspect that they would have been applied

As far as +++'s go; initially they weren't charged to award flights.

After about 18 months Qantas advised their FFers in the newsletters etc that these charges would need to be paid when booking award flights.

IIRC, the first ones that affected me was the $3.40 (pre GST) SYD noise levy.

I think the last 37½K trips I purchased in Nov 2000 for my Daughter's Honeymoon in Nov 2001 cost about $60 each in +++. (MEL-BNE-CNS-ASP-AYQ-BME-PER-MEL)
