Becoming a Travel agent - Good or bad

Hi

I decided to ask this here, as some of you may be travel agents or others may know their travel agent fairly well.

I'm studying Business at University and i am possibly planning to do my last year of the course studying Hotel/tourism management.

Now i was thinking that something that could help me out in the future (after i get my degree) is trying to get employment into a related industry.

Does anyone here know if this is a good industry to get into?
I was thinking of possibly doing a tafe course (2 or 3 weeks i was told) during the holidays and possibly starting during 2nd year uni, (2 weekdays a week partime)

i was considering trying for the graduate entry program into qantas when i finish my degree,
and i though something like this would be of help

Thanks
- David

Travel agent good/bad?

Hi David,

Many years ago, about 10, I was near this same cross roads (but older) I did a TAFE cert. in Qld. and was offered a Job at Ansett in my first year. Tried to do both but it was too much so the TAFE was put on hold. I was a CSO at BNE airport. Loved the work hated the shift work.

As AN, also had many international carriers that dep/arr at very earyly/late hours in BNE for check in etc..

My wife is also Ex Ansett. She was a Group leader in Ansett's business travel. After Air NZ stuffed Ansett, she now works for a large well know American travel agent. Poor pay, poor conditions and just hard work. But we do have Flts all over the world (no FF points) great rates at 5 star hotels and the first inside info on deals. Is it worth it? At times yes/no.

If you can deal with the public, well give it a go! :P

I could not, left Ansett back to my original love, technical in 97'

Miss all my old mates, who some, are now with QF

Ansett was stuffed well before Air NZ got into it. It's just that Air NZ had eyes bigger than its belly.

Air NZ

Redrat

Yes, oh so very true, Air NZ bit off an Airline larger than its self and came down with a dose of very bad food posioning.

Due to there own incompetance off not doing a due dilligence look at what a poor table partner AN would be to a smaller airline they suffered a trip to the NZ Gov. for much needed intensive care. ($ 750,000,000 worth)

SIA might have been more palitable to all parties, but Air NZ was hungry, paid too much, almost died. How ever 16,000 Australian's suffered due to there greed, one being my wife

Ansett may well have been stuffed before Air NZ got into it HOWEVER they had not been raped and pillaged at that stage

The latest news about the Air NZ "forgetting" about a $100M+ tax bill in Hong Kong comes as music to my ears.

I believe it's conveniently forgotten that it was the Australian Govt. via CASA that shut AN down.
ANZ realised it couldn't run a company like AN from across the Tasman and they also tried to mold in its own image - it was never going to work.

Sidetracked - Yes, Interesting - Yes.
It happens regularly & funnily enough the same thing happens when I'm in a regular conversation with someone.
I think it provides the variability I like in this forum.

Yeah i don't mind,

i got my answer anyway.

Provided i havent advanced from my customer service role at the store i work at by the end of the year, i'm planning on contacting Flight Centre and finding out if they need people in my area and then find out exactly what kind of course i need too do.
i've had a play around with the galalio software before, and things like that come naturaly to me.
;-D

so feal free to continue the anset, airnz discussion,
It sounds interesting.

BTW the Ansett ticket tax was evil,
we flew on a flight after the deadline and just because we paid for our tickets in advance we were still charged.
no refund from qantas (14 tickets total = 140 dollars, which is not a small amount)

Re: Becoming a Travel agent - Good or bad

DaveM, good on you for giving the travel industry a go.

Whichever agency you choose to approach, may I suggest not to go into an agency without doing a check of say the NSW Dept of Fair Trading small claims tribunal (search for travel) as this could give you some valuable insights into claims lodged by (presumably) irate consumers against various travel agencies.

Checking the details of claims could also give you an insight as to whether or not there is a pattern to the claims and if so, glean some idea of the operations of some agencies in relation to what customers expect and what some agencies provide / don't provide.

I know first hand about having a couple of holidays wrecked because of the rogue behaviour of some agencies, and quite frankly, blatant lies about what fares etc are available and my "best options" etc, which is why I now give as little as possible to TAs, preferring to do most of my travel arrangements myself.

There would also be articles in BRW for example, which give you a good understanding about CEO's business philosophy and future plans which will again provide some idea of where they're heading and if that is the right fit for you. If nothing else, all this is good research for your job application. Good luck for your future endeavours.
