Was not just speculation, it was in the press announcements from QF when they first mentioned the 787 purchase.

There is a long time and lot of water under the bridge between the original orders and first deliveries. Plan can change considerably in that time ... and change back again several times. I would not be surprised either way. The benefit with the 787 order is the fleet flexibility it provides to the Qantas Group.

However, as is often the case, its not just the technical issues that determine the eventual plan. Things like union agreements and staff conditions can play a significant roll in determining how a new aircraft type is to be implemented.

Re: QP Lounge Meetings

Mal and JohnK,

Hope this explains things a bit better. VH-OJC/OJD movements for SUN 17:

Code:
VH-OJD

QF0006 FRA/SIN/SYD (Arrive SUN)
QF0074 SYD/MEL
QF0025 MEL/AKL/LAX

VH-OJC

QF0026 LAX/AKL/MEL (Arrive SUN)
QF0073 MEL/SYD
QF0005 SYD/SIN/FRA
A summary of what happened on Sunday:

VH-OEF operated QF74 from SFO-SYD, before turning around to operate QF107 SYD-LAX-JFK. VH-OJD arrived from FRA/SIN and then continued QF74 down to MEL before continuing on to AKL/LAX. On the other hand, VH-OJC arrived from LAX/AKL as QF26 before continuing on to SYD as QF73. In SYD VH-OJO came along and then continued QF73 to SFO and VH-OJC later flew on to Singapore and Frankfurt.

These flights aren't necessarily for maintenance, they are mainly there to reposition aircraft in Sydney and Melbourne. Now instead of running the 747s empty between the 2 cities and using a repositioning flight number such as QF6181, QF simply number it QF73/74 and opens it for bookings.

QF31 is SYD/SIN/LHR, and not SIN/FRA like the FAs said JohnK ( not that this really matters though ).

Thanks for sharing the photos and great trip report. One of the photos kpc took has the pattern that will features on the new 734/763 (domestic) seat fabrics Seems you had a nice trip there and back!

I hope my post explains more about the query you had Mal:

Quote:
QF74 SFO-SYD is a 3 class plane. SYD-MEL 2 class.
QF73 MEL-SYD is a 2 class plane. SYD-SFO 3 class.
QF fleet ops is both interesting yet at the same time often confusing.

Take care

Cheers

(ooops, waaaaay OT!)...

Cheers for that

I'm glad I'm not co-ordinating their planes, staff and the various bits that have to all fall together into place!

It would be interesting to know why QF decided to use the QF73/74 numbers for the MEL-SYD and SYD-MEL flights and not just to continue the QF5/6 or QF25/26. When QF25/26 operated BNE-AKL-LAX and LAX-AKL-BNE, the SYD-BNE and BNE-SYD extensions used the QF25/26 flights numbers.

So I have to assume there is more value in the schedule appearing to have a MEL-SFO flight than a FRA-MEL (via SIN and SYD) or another LAX-SYD (via AKL and MEL). Its all in the market perception.

The FAs only mentioned that it continues on to FRA. Silly me gets QF5/6 and QF31/32 confused most times.
