We had booked here for 3 nights at the end of our aborted Asian trip. The 3 nights were on the November special rate.As I needed 6 nights to get my Q4 bonus we booked another 3 nights-also a good excuse to spend time with our grandaughter. We were able to get 2 nights at the December special rate-also $170 a night but our first night was a Saturday and it was booked solid-all we could get was a rate of $270 but it included parking, breakfast and a coffee and slice of pie in the lobby lounge.
Considering we had 3 different bookings for our 6 night stay check in was a breeze. The only delay was when the agent said I have to go and check with the manager. She came back saying he agreed we would be upgraded to a Darling Harbour suite for the 6 nights.Platinum amenities were offered.
The room was large. Not an exciting decor but a great view.

It was an ideal spot for plane watching and seeing the 380's making their approach to SYD.
    The bedroom-

The entrance with fridge and microwave(plus a couple of plates, bowls and cutlery)-

    and the sitting room-

The view at night was also good-

Staff were very friendly especially the doormen.Only slight problems. We got up late one morning, put out the do not disturb sign whilst we showered, bought it back in~1030 but when we came back at 1830 the room was not made up.Fixed quickly with a phone call. The other mildly amusing thing was that the December rate qualified for a free newspaper but the november rate didnt-though I think that the explanation was really some quick creative thinking.
Very convenient location-obviously good for Darling Harbour, yet only 2 blocks from the QVB.Lots of restaurants. We went to Tony Romas which is next door for a ribs fix. Also a very good Greek restaurant just 1 short block up Market street-Medusa.Their special slow cooked lamb and potatoes was great but huge portions that we couldnt finish.
Certainly on the special rates this was good value for money with very good elite status recognition.

I agree - very pleasant stays the two times i've stayed there. Great value @ $170, not so great @ $270!

The 4P Sydney do frequently upgrade PLT guests to Darling Harbour view suites however I find the room decor a bit too bland for my liking.

The 4P management is sometimes enthusiastic and will send up a personalised welcome card, a complimentary bottle of wine and cheese plate to the room however it happens occasionally only.

Generally the 4P is a comfortable hotel that is well located however if the price exceeds anything more than the low $200's I think you may be able to find better hotels at that price.

(OT - Stayed at the Sheraton on the Park last weekend - specifically to attend the Carols in the Domain - and was again upgraded to an executive suite. Its now 5 from 5 at the SOTP in suite upgrades this year and I'm very impressed with the decor of the renovated exec. lounge.)

Stayed there in 2005 and 2006 as a SPG gold.

No recognition, no nothing really - second time a really crap room.

No interest in ever staying there again.

I stayed here only once (back in 2004) & was upgraded to a harbour view suite - as an newly-joined SPG nuthin'.!! It certainly reflects some of the vagaries and inconsistencies in elite status recognition with SPG.

Anyways, rumours from FT suggest that the hotel is up for sale, or will be in the near future. So, presuming a buyer is found, it may be lost from the Starwood stable. I also seem to recall that it is considered the largest hotel in Australia.

    Re: Four Points Sydney

Stayed there as SPG Gold, got upgraded to Harbour View Room. I used the SPG Z2H promo and the room rate worked out to be $90/night which was fantastic value. Comfy hotel, can't complain much for the rate. Decor best described as functional - v typical of 4P. Hotel amenities are nicer than a lot of the 4Ps I've stayed at then again this is supposed to be an above average 4P. Unfortunately no free internet unlike 4Ps in NA.

Though lately the rates have not been too different from the Sheraton on the Park and so that's where I've been staying.

    Re: Four Points Sydney

I agree that I would not stay here if the rate was close to the Sheraton(or hilton).however on this stay the SOTP was $260 and $320 for the Saturday night-I was booking less than a week out.It brought up the weakness of the SPG booking platform cf Hilton. With Hilton they will give you the best available rate and in this instance would have said night 1 was $270 but nights 2,3 were $170.Trying to make a booking for 13/12 for 3 nights it only gave you the $270 as the cheapest option. But doing 2 nights from 14/12 it came up with the $170 option.Really annoying as you have really to try all possibilities to come up with the true lowest rate.
For 2009 it is SOTP~$250 and the 4 points $220 so my bookings are with SOTP.
I agree it is annoying that the internet wasnt free here-SPG certainly havent yet got the cheaper end of the market right yet so when back in the states will almost certainly go back to HGIs.

Never stayed at HGIs before but so true about 4Ps. The one in Miami Beach was feral.
