Go-rounds at Sydney Airport, 16/10/08

I live right near Sydney airport, with a great view of it (& the planes flying by at window level!).

Today I saw something this morning I hadn't before - 2 go-rounds. Different planes, a couple of hours apart.

It didn't seem windy today - does anybody know what was going on at the airport today?

thanks

Go rounds happen about twice a day on average at KSA and have done for some time, nothing significant in it as reasons vary, including aircraft clearing runways slower than expected, tugs going slower than expected etc.

Mind you, its always fun when the navaid testing is being done and you have an aircraft going around every couple of minutes, makes the tower work for thier money (and approach control).

Re: Go-rounds at Sydney Airport, 16/10/08

As suggested, go rounds do happen for a variety of reasons. Yes - there could be runway incursion issues, but these seem less likely.

I am presuming these were domestic flights rather than Int'l. Talking with some of my pilot friends, there seems to be issues with the lack of experience of many of the pilots in the seat at the moment, who lack local understanding of the particular runways and approaches.

Your comment about lack of strong winds may have been right, but not all go rounds are caused by extreme weather. Looking at the experiences in Dubai, part of their issue is that many of the go rounds arise due to the light tail winds dropping off below 300 metres, and without more throttle the pilots would end up short of the piano keys on the runway - and therefore go around as they are out of position to land the plane.

Whatever, the reason, is there anyone who doesn't love going around?
