In an update - I used skype on the recent trip with a wired headset (rather than bluetooth) and the quality was so much better

I use a USB plug-in handset (looks like a regular phone), and I would give it 9/10. Most people can't tell I'm calling from a Skype type service using the handset, whereas they always could before.

Re: Skype

FWIW, i used it today with my Blueant V12 and it worked like a charm. I was using it whilst cooking dinner and therefore using microwave, fridge, over etc (all things that can destroy the signal) and it worked brilliantly and only got degraded when i went to the other side of the house which isnt adittedly that big but only has plaster walls. I unforutnately read the cost wrong and thought it was 2.6 cents per minute not 26 cents, but it worked quite well nonetheless. I might use it for Skype to skype only and use engin or something like that for household cals but i think you need some special equipment not just a softphone as such.
