I even tried to call customer service center and was told this promotion had been expired two years ago???
I signed up in March 2008 [8 months ago] for the Fee Free Gold card, and was updated to Platinum just over a month ago. I had difficulty finding a link, and ended up only successful through using one on another thread (??? - not sure which one) here. [Note some of the links on AFF tfrd you to Citibank, but the URL's were not 'active'. One i found was].

Good on you, but as I said I have tried all of threads which pasted on this topic, all of them are no longer available, they are all transferred to citibank's main website in QZ. I believe there are too many people tried these links and citi has felt sick about people calling them to ask the same question.
I wish this promotion will come back again but during the economic crisis, citi wants the money very badly at the moment.

I managed to get the free free for life as well as 4.9% for the life of the balance transfer... the card was upgraded to Plat last month - free free and 4.9% as well.

Fee Free is nice, but in some respects the issue is a few hundred dollars [always better in your pocket understandably, and the peace of mind that it will not hit at a bad time], but we - holders of the card - need to be thankful Citibank are not calling in all the debts outstanding on the card, because they have gone under. Fee Free should be the smaller of your concerns.

Have seen the news on the web, citi will cut 2500 employees in Australia to save the cost. They may consider starting charging any fees they can put on you.

Oh yes Mark. Thanks for the clarification and current status - i was hypothesising - and selfishly thinking of myself and how most of my family's last trip to Paris [wife shopping and 5* hotels] have been supported by Citibank - about how i could attempt to pay it all off quickly.

Despite the so-called government guarantees (both in the US and Australia), I am reviewing my banking exposure to Citi. I have far more $$$ invested with Citi than cash outstanding on my Citi Visa.
The bank can still go under. If that happens it gets messy for depositors to claim their funds back under the guarantee. Depositors probably would not lose their money but they might not have immediate access to funds and they could miss out on receiving interest while the mess gets resolved. Receivers would likely shut down the high cash-drain assets like staff and IT quick smart so it would become a headache to pay out depositors in the short term - given that key systems could be shut down in a flash.
I don't believe either the US or Australian government guarantees go as far as to guarantee that it will be business as usual at Citi (ie you will be able to get withdraw your money on demand) if the bank fails.
