Qantas Syd <=> London (LHR) return special from $1610.

This is another example why I love Qantas because they prefer
to take most of the profits from Australians.

For travel period around May/June 08, this may apply to other period as well, so have a look yourself.

From their HK site, they have return HK<=>LHR as cheap as HKD $3140, that's ~$410 AUD ! I think you might get ff points for that. They are in fact cheaper than Oasis HK at that price.

The Qantas SYD<=>HK usual price is around $1150, so total is only $~1600 AUD !

We all know that from the Australia site, which sells to Australians, the price for that period is $2324, so that's ~$600 AUD difference !!

You can go to HK using LCCs like viva macau which is about $800 return.
so can bring the total cost down to $1200 return !

Interesting isn't it ?

This is a common situation. Many here take advantage of lower fares when purchased overseas.

In one case, I have purchased for AUD8K a fare that if purchased in OZ would have cost AUD10½K at the time. (cf, DONE4 ex CMB)

Thanks for the info

Yeah, as Australians, Qantas thinks we are easy prey to rip off. Good to see people are monitoring other places

Note the current sale finishes 31/01/2008

Its actually any home market situation, eg SQ price higher ex SIN than the return flights from other destinations also.

But thats a great price HKG-LHR ! if only we could get SIN-HKG cheap, at the moment its very booked out and fares are high.

for SIN=>HKG you can fly Jetstar Asia SIN=>HKG or SIN=>Macau, they are cheap, and also Tiger flies SIN=>Macau as well. It is only a 4 hour flight, so LCC is fine ....

Re: Qantas Syd <=> London (LHR) return special from $1610.

yes booking QF ex-Aus is often much dearer than booking QF from our friendly ex-asian neighbours of SIN, HKG, BKK......

eg. on Y, ~AUD$870 SIN-SYD-SIN versus $1300 SYD-SIN-SYD...... that's more than 50% premium ex-SYD

ps. the 1st flight to SIN would be via award redemption, and hence always buy rtn ex-SIN (or anywhere other than ex-australia) thereafter...

Nothing new or out of the ordinary about this. IIRC, during June/July you can fly MEL-JFK-MEL for about $3400 AUD on QF. To travel at same time JFK-MEL-JFK on QF, fare is about $2000 AUD.

My mother just bought two business class tickets on Cathay for LHR-BNE-LHR for $5,500 inclusive per person to come over in late February. That is way cheaper than any OneWorld fare the other way.

Flights from UK to AU are usually cheaper than the other way round, ie Australians are being ripped off to high heaven, even moreso than the wealthy British (how do I know? I am British also).

But until the average Australian notices that they are getting ripped off and squawks, airlines such as Qantas will continue to gouge its passengers. It's not going to happen anytime soon. That's why I don't fly paid Qantas.

This not unique to Qantas. It is common for airlines to offer the biggest discounts in markets where they are less dominant. A common example is that it is can be significantly cheaper to fly AMS-LHR-SYD than to fly LHR-SYD when purchasing from BA.
