It just shows how wrapped up the various carriers think the Australia outbound market is. When we first visited Australia in May 2007, I paid 2000GBP for my family of four from BHX-DXB-SIN-BNE with EK. Current exchange rates that's about AU$4200. That's about as much as 2 adult tickets to the UK.
More competition for destinations out of London?
Well, I don't think that's the reason.
Airlines (and any other business for that matter) will charge whatever the market will bear.
Aussies seem to happily shell out for inflated airfares, so that's why they're high. If people didn't want to pay such exhorbitant amounts, airlines would have to reduce the fares, which is what is happening in the US at the moment.
Quite simple, really.
It appears SQ is in on the act as well, according to this from

The latest to slash prices to Australasia is Singapore Airlines. It says to celebrate flying the A380 ex-Heathrow for a year: we say because Malaysian, Qantas and Middle East airlines are offering similair deals. Anyway, Sydney and four more Oz cities for £499 and NZ from £515 is the deal - book from March 20-24 and travel between Apr 16-Jun 15.
