They seem to have changed their backend slightly:

That link is to a private forum (no public access)
Here is a post from there that sums it up nicely.

First time i've ever been able to get through on any of these sales.

23 Jul - 17 Sep 08
15 Oct - 10 Dec 08
Not available on domestic segments of international flights though...
Jetstar's 4th Birthday Sale:
In our exciting 4th Birthday Sale, you can book 2 JetSaver Light^ fares, with carry on baggage only, and the total cost will be one JetSaver Light fare plus $4!
The sale fares displayed below are the price per passenger. These fares will be booked as 2 equal fares and must be booked in pairs. When you search, the sale fares will be identified by our special birthday sale fare banner.
JetSaver fares, which include checked baggage allowance, are also on sale, so the choice is yours!
On sale now until midnight (23:59) Monday 05 May 2008, unless sold out prior. For travel on selected flights and days and for limited travel periods in 2008. May not be available during school or public holidays. Limited availability on Fridays and Sundays.
Cheapest fares since the launch - grabbed 2 tkts to HNL for $600 all in.
The system is working well at the moment because they haven't emailed the database yet. So get in now - or sit clicking 1000 times tonight
IMPORTANT UPDATE!! ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE THAT HAVE ALREADY BOOKED!
Jetstar system has stuffed up the pricing for the early bookers meaning that the flights were $500 (or $250 per person) cheaper than they should have been. The special which I booked for $600 is now just over a $1000 in total - which is advertised as the $4 friend special.
I have a funny feeling I'm going to be getting a phonecall from Jetstar asking me for more money!!
Legally (I presume) my answer will be no. They can't ask for more money?

I checked the prices for my SYD-HNL 25NOV08 and HNL-SYD 02DEC08 flights which are now $430+ more than what I booked it ($595) for.
Regardless, the website says $281.50 SYD-HNL for 1 person PLUS $4.00 for the 2nd person, so a return trip is $571.00 plus CC charges - which is the figure I have booked.
"The fares shown below are the price per passenger. These fares will be booked as 2 equal fares, and must be booked in pairs. When you search, sale fares will be identified by our special birthday sale fare banner!"
So what Jetstar are trying to say is that the $281 airfare is the normal airfare (say $550) + $4 divided by two. So in reality 2 people to HNL on the special flying return should be $281 x 2 x 2.
Their systems are bad enough without confusing the punter even further! :-)
