Hertz DoD CDP Code- Should I do it?

Quick question for the masses.
Will be in Sydney from 23th Dec until 2 Jan and need to hire a car with Hertz.
So I do my usual QFF CDP code to get a 3% discount, (Ends up at $835.00) then my usual flick around the net to see if I can find something better.
Well this time I found a great CDP from DoD (Dept of Defense) which brought the rate down to a great $583.00 (DOD STAFF LEISURE )

Now the question is, do I apply it to my booking and see if they will ask me for DoD ID on pickup (Where I claim I found the code on the net and applied it or go the "Oh my god, I left it at home") or not bother because they will ask and under no circumstances will they give that rate without the proper ID???

To using a CDP which you are not entilted to is big risk imho.
Where I work the company CDP results in a very low rate because the company carries all the insurance risk. We have been warned not to us the company CDP for private hires.

If you happen to make an insurance claim would expect you will on your own if the CDP is not valid.

After working for one of the major car rental companies for many years, there is a chance you wont be asked for ID, HOWEVER, if there is any damage to the vehicle you are liable for everything up to and including full replacement value of the vehicle, as the DOD would normally cover this under there own coverages.

If the rental was with Avis, using the DOD AWD number (AWD is same as CDP) the rental agent would be prompted to ask for ID and your DOD ID number would be entered into a special field in the rental contract.

I would stay well clear of using discount codes that you were not entitled to, it may save you some cash, but it may cost a lot more if something happened.

That aspect seems flawed in relation to one that is listed as Staff leisure

Even so, there are big risks in using a CDP number not entitled to especially if something goes wrong and end up liable for ALL damage ( not limited to $2000 etc )

A largish organisation I work with has quite a good deal with a major car rental company.

If being used in relation to work activity; excess is $275 and QFF points can be earned.

For personal use, staff have a separate CDP, they get the same cost and QFF, but excess is a reducible $2750.

Similar for the ADO (not DoD !) CDPs. The excess for the staff leisure CDP is not quite as good from memory as the duty travel one, but is still very good. The OP should expect to be asked for their ADO pass.

Thanks for the replies.
Would be great if Hertz had a CDP number for clients who take full responsibilty for the vehicle without being attached to an organization. Thinking a 2 week comp insurance would get around the problem, for about $25.

Anyway, come up with a better (And safer solution) I'm going to hire the car NOT at the airport and return it to the airport (Hertz dont seem to charge a different point dropoff , if in the same city). Total cost brings it down to the $500 mark. Something is a bit strange when, for the pleasure of walking off the plane into a car costs an extra $300 for the 9 days. ( I understand why but still a 40% premium)

Its intrigued me why the Airport Concession Recovery fees should apply as a percentage for the entire duration of a vehicle hire. It dosnt take too many days for a hire before it does become cheaper to take a taxi from the airport - even straight to the downtown hire location.

(Thinking about that, its curious that Sydney Airport Corp hasnt found a way to apply a percentage to taxi pickups from the airport rather than a flat fee).

Some airports actually charge a 'recovery fee' on rentals being dropped off. I've been told Auckland does this - sure to spread to an airport near you.

Agree about the charges. More money grabbing by both rental companies and airports.

Some Hertz Local Edition places will actually drop off cars to airports in the U.S - hence avoiding the Concession Recovery Fee.

I think the worst in Australia is Newcastle Airport, but not really sure now.


Regarding the original post - I'm sure I've read stories on Flyertalk about why you shouldn't do that (mainly around Insurance reasons), but can't find a direct link. When I was involved in a damage report with one company, the form asked what company affiliation I was using etc. I suspect that I would have had serious questions if that affiliation was invalid.
