I hope you're not disappointed with the New Majesitc. It's probably not quite a 5* star hotel, and it does have it's good points and bad points.
On the downside the rooms are fairly small (depending I guess on the type of room you've booked nevertheless make good use of available space) and can be a little noisy (depending on if you are on the bar side of the hotel). It also gets some negative reviews (on tripadvisor) for its breakfast, although I find it perfect for what I want when staying for business it does have a realtively small selection, so I understand those on holidays who have hours at the disposable to graze on mountains of food would be disappointed. Oh, and given this if a FF website no FF points ....
On the upside great design, friendly boutique hotel feel (with only 30 rooms) , great bar and restaurant, good location (it's not in Orchard -yay - probably a bit unfair but I liken staying at Orchard to staying at Chadstone), very close to the MRT, free brekky/broadband/soft mini-bar (probably not important for you - but does allow me to justify staying there when we have lower corporate rates - room only -at the Le Meridien! And a little personal plus ... I find the quilt/doona/duvet on the beds perfect. I always struggle with quilts in tropical climes - usually end up asking for a flat sheet for the bed, but not at the New Majestic.
I've just booked in for my third (and fourth) stays at the property over the next two weeks, so on balance, I do prefer it to many other Singapore hotels, and do prefer it to the Scarlet which is another modern boutique Chinatown hotel.
